Good Morning Folks

I have my first client.

She is a cleaner and goes into private homes to clean up for couples who have busy working lives.  She started last February and I helped her complete her tax return last month which obviously covered her 2 months from Feb to March 2019.  Hopefully she will want me to complete her tax return next year.  So do you advise me to get a hold of her invoices/receipts on a weekly or monthly basis and put them on a (say) an excel spreadsheet or shall I use some other software like Freeagent?

Thanks

 Hi

Congratulations on getting your first client :) I've always found spreadsheets perfectly ok for the job for sole traders

 Hi

Yes, Xero, Quickbook, Sage and Zoho. However many sole traders are reluctant to pay money for a monthly subscription for a product if they are not earning much from their business.

Hi Louise

Once again many thanks for your reply.

I was going tocxoncentrated mainly on doing the books for sole traders.

Iguess that won't be much porifitable/?

Thanks

 Hi

I wouldn't restrict yourself to only sole traders, no you can't do final accounts for Ltd co's but you can do everything else throughout the year for them, they just have to have an accountant do that. Of course there are sole traders out there who do a fair level of work that would mean they can afford to pay for regular book keeping, but most are very small concerns and I find that doing their accounts only annually for the SA return sufficient, and only takes half a day's work. I've not many sole traders who can afford to pay £'s for it either

Good Evening Louise

Once again, many thanks indeed for you advise.

The reason why I chose sole traders as clients is because I enjoy the one to one interaction.  However, I do see your point, in that they won't be very profitable in the long run.

Do you suggest that I do supplementary assessments such as the payroll exam in order to do bookkeeping for small buisnesses which hopefully would be more profitable?

Thanks in advance for your response.

 Hi

Many of my Ltd co clients are small businesses and not really any different to soletraders in that sense, so very much one to one or one to very few interacation. If you really do want to specialise in sole traders however I would recommend getting the self assessment qualification as an add on as this will attract more clients requiring this service
