I have a client that installs solar panels.

The VAT on solar PV is zero and for car chargers is to 20%.

If they were to include a car charger free of charge with a solar PV installations, would the total invoice still be zero VAT rate?

Okay, two points to make on this - hope it helps:

1. There are potential VAT implications to consider with regards to reclaiming input VAT on the purchase of the EV chargers if your client is intending to give them away.

2. EV Chargers are not on the approved HMRC list of energy saving items. It is therefore my understanding that even if installed at the same time as the solar panels, the EV charger is just an additional electric point and neither energy saving or a fundamental requirement of the Solar PV installation. Therefore, after considering my first point, if your client did decide to include a free EV charger, they would still need to invoice any labour relating to the EV charger installation at 20%.
