Transferring from AAT to ICB - now starting Level 4.

I’m in the final stages of transferring my AAT Level 2 & 3 Accounting qualifications to ICB through the exemption route and I'm planning to start my ICB Level 4 journey in the coming weeks, self-studying Self-Assessment Tax as my first qualification.

I spent two years completing my AAT studies through the local college's funded adult-learner programme but now that I’m looking at how I go about becoming a freelance bookkeeper I’ve really felt the gap between AAT and real-world bookkeeping.

While I’ve gained hands-on experience in a number of part-time admin roles doing bookkeeping and accounts over the last four years, primarily for a domiciliary care provider and a non-profit, both using Xero and supported by the company accountants, I'm hesitant in moving into self-employed work for new unknown clients.

This autumn I’ll be taking on just one client, the same non-profit I’ve already been working for in-house, simply moving from an employee to a contractor role.

I’m not looking to rush into picking up lots of new clients straight away. Getting the balance right between building experience, filling those knowledge gaps and growing gradually is really important to me. That's not to say I haven’t had a tonne of “fake it until you make it” advice over the last few months but it doesn’t sit right with me!

Has anyone else been through a similar transition recently? I’d really appreciate hearing how you approached this and any tips you found helpful.
