Studying with Kaplan

I feel slightly disappointed that i have gone with Kaplan now. There is no structure. I was posted a box with books and mock exams and just kind of left to read through all the materials myself.  There are no assignment given.

Anyone else with Kaplan and how are they finding it.

Hi Ghislane,

Without trying to sound flippant, what did you expect from a home study course? They have tutor support available should you need it, both on the phone and using their study forum. And there are plenty of exercises to work through in the books.

Or were you not expecting home study? I know they have venues all round the country for teaching.

Hi Ghislane

I must admit I would have expected assignments of some sort but then it is several years ago since I embarked on that type of home study.

What did the course offer before you bought it?

Cheers

Dear Ghislane,

I manage the distance learning courses at Kaplan. We do have scores of activities in the study material itself as well as the mock exams, so we do ensure that your learning is constantly being re-inforced throughout your studies.

If you would like more assignments I should be able to help you though, you could email me at icb@kaplan.co.uk and I will pick it up from there with you.

Or what would perhaps be even better if you could speak to me over the phone and we could discuss your study plans together and go through in detail your ultimate goals of what you want to get out of the course. I am accountancy qualified so am well placed to assist.

My telephone number is 0113 200 6366. I am out of the office today but back in tomorrow, alternatively you could ring that number today and ask to speak a tutor who I'm sure would guide you. If you would prefer me to call you on a specific time, then please let me know.

I look forward to speaking you

Kind regards
Neil Burslem

Hi Ghislane,

I bought Kaplan Certificate course in April, which included Level I, Level II both Manual and Compterised. I found the home study course excellant. For the Level I and level II manual I went through the books systimatically. I read each chapter doing all the "test your Knowledge" questions and after each chapter I did all the excercises in the KIT.
The package came with 2 mock exams for EACH part of the course.  (These you can do and send to Kaplan).I am not sure what other assignments you expect.

I found it very structured and the course built on your knowledge as you went through. To suppliement the course I bought and took the online mock exams (highly recommended) and I also bought the Frank Wood book (see amazon.)

Within a month I had passed both my manual exams with a 100% in both.  I am about the embark on the computer level II and level III manual.

I thought the material was excellant. However I did not make use of the tutors and therefore for my Level III manual I have just bought the KAPLAN books. (but keepling to KAPLAN)

I have throughly enjoyed doing the bookkeeping courses.

Make use of all your available help from both the ICB and Kaplan.

Good Luck and we all look forward to hearing your results.

Many thanks for your messages.

Thank you Neil- I will contact you tomorrow to discuss my study plans.

Jason--When reading through other peoples forum who are studying with Ideal School, they seem to have so many assignment which they have to complete and send back to get marked. It seems to be done in stages. Thats what i thought it would be like.

Liz- The course does offer online and phone support- but the reason i don't phone is that i find it difficult to pinpoint exactly where i need help

Trippy- I went through the book, seemed ok and understood each section but when it comes to putting everything together i just get in a muddle. I feel frustrated with myself i'm putting hours in reading doing the tasks and kit and seems like im getting nowhere fast.

Well there is point of view thst you get what you pay for. And looking at the Ideal Schools prices, you pay for a lot more, so I guess you get a lot more.

The important thing is not too get flustered. Give them a call. You dont have to pinpoint where you are going wrong, that's what they are paid to help you with.
