Allowable Expense?

Hello

I think I already know that the answer to this is going to be "No", but just thought I would check on the off chance.

I have a client who is a beauty therapist, and she works from home using her living room as a salon.

Obviously because there is a high amount of traffic through her house, her laminate flooring has taken a real battering.

Would the cost of her replacing the floor be an allowable expense?  I know it would not be wholly and exclusively used for business purposes, and therefore the answer would be no - but if it were not for the business, the flooring wouldn't need replacing.

She does not currently claim any element of wear and tear allowance - would I be right in suggesting this as an alternative rather than claiming the actual cost of the flooring?

Thanks for any help

Hi Sandra

if you client is working from home and thew wear and tear has been caused by the additional traffic caused by running the business from home then she should be able to claim a proportion of it against her income.

If she has and accountant ask them to provide with the proportion to claim if not you can call her HMRC tax office and get them to give you a ruling on it.

Kind regards
Stuart
