Payroll Management course material

I am planning to do the diploma in payroll management next,

Similar to a thread in another section.

I have looked in the ICB Syllabuses section for the Diploma in Payroll Management.

First question – It has two parts manual and computerised. Are both sections covered in the same home based exam – i.e I have only one exam to site?

Second question – Best & Cheapest Study material –

Home Learning - £833! Ideal Schools is £499, Sage Instant Payroll Self-Study Workbooks £45, Sage 50 Payroll Self-Study Workbooks stage 1 & 2 £145

With Home learning and Ideal schools I am paying for Tutor help and marking of assessments that I don’t need/want. I have used Kaplan before but they don’t seem to do this and I didn’t use the tutor help.

Do the sage payroll study book cover everything – I doubt it? Is there a supplementary book/material that I can use. I believe that there is a toolkit or something from HMRC but I couldn’t locate it when I searched through Directgov. Found it at I think at http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/layer?topicId=1086857322

Anyone used either of the SAGE package and is SAGE 50 stage 1 & 2 worth the £100 more than the sage instant payroll?

Any thoughts gratefully Received.

Clare

PS There is so much information on the ICB website when you start digging around. The search is pretty good. Well done ICB.

I can answer one of the questions for you - there is only one exam to sit and it covers both manual and computerised.

I don't have the discipline to study on my own so went with the provider that has an advert on this forum. I got it cheaper than the £499 they advertise as I had done another course with them and received a 10% discount. I looked on this not as an expense but more of an investment in my future.

If you are not going down the route of using a course provider then I suggest the first thing you should do is buy a copy of the mock exam in the ICB shop to see what you will be required to know for the exam.

Hi Clare,

I am currently using the Sage Instant payroll self-study workbooks.  They cover both computerised and the manual side of bookkeeping and although I'm only on book 2 they seem to be pretty good and I think cover everything you will need for your diploma.  You get a 180 day trial of Sage Instant payroll which should be plenty long enough to study and take your exam with.  What you can't glean from the workbooks you can get from HMRC website.  I have downloaded most of their pdf files regarding payroll to use whilst studying.

Having said that, if you have no experience of payroll at all then you may be better off doing a course with tutor support.

Hope this helps

Pauline and Peasie

Thank you for your comments.

I am buying the SAGE Instant Payroll with 180 day trail and work books. I am going to download the HMRC information. I am all going on an HMRC workshop. I will see how I get on. I have done payroll when I ran a previous business many moons ago, so hopefully some of it will come back but of course the lastest deatils I have to get from HMRC.

Pauline Interested on how you are getting on with your payroll studying. I will down load the mock paper as well.

Pauline - glad your giving it a go!

Clare I used the sage study books and had never done payroll (although had a basic understanding of it).  I had brought a course from a training provider and still don't understand it (well I do it's just the way it has been written best place for it is in the bin!). I also used the HMRC website. The Sage study books I have also show you how it's done manually and also I find it useful still having the study books to see how to do something that I don't do often.

Hi Clare, Ange,

I am getting on fine with my payroll studying....the Sage books are good.  I'm finding the Sage Instant payroll a little cramped, not being able to expand the window to full screen, but I'm assuming that's just because it is a trial version.

You were right Ange I didn't need to buy another expensive course  :-)

Is there a mock paper to download?  Must admit I haven't looked yet.

Hi Everyone,

I've also been through a similar process regarding what course material to use for Payroll. I did all my previous studying with Home Learning but when I approached them about the Payroll course they quoted me £1300!!

I looked at Ideal Schools but saw from a couple of comments on this forum that the course material wasn't very clear. So I've decided to try the Sage self study course (cheapest option!). I've got it but not started it yet. Will let you know I get on. Seems like a few of us are doing it so we could probably all help each other out.

Hi Nicky

£1300 - what planet are they one, maybe it is for larger companies to pay their employees to go one. £1300 Surprised

My copy is sitting there saying open me but I have so much other stuff to do.

I have booked on some of the HMRC courses to suppliment the course. A list can be seen at
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/bst/advice-team-events/work1.htm.

There seems to be a number of us embarking on the Sage Instant Payroll self study course. Good to know there is support and like minded people out there.

Good Luck all and keep in touch. I will  (or someone else can) start a new specific discussion under payroll once I have openned the box. Laughing

Hi Clare, Nicky,

I am on Book 2 of the Sage self-study and am so far finding it very good.  You don't have to do the books in the order that they are given, you can swap about.  Each section has its own backup to restore at the start of it.

It details manual payroll as well which is quite good, read in conjunction with the various helpbooks on HMRC website.  It is a bit repetitive in places, but perhaps that's good (drums it in to you...lol)

Let me know how you get on.

I too am looking into payroll. The main reason is that a colleague of mine is thinking of setting up on his own and wants me to do his books. If I can offer him payroll as well then my chances may seem greater.

Am wading my way through all the booklets from HMRC at the moment, just got to organise myself a little better. I too downloaded a mock paper and found that most of the exam concentrates on the computerised side and the competency to use the software. PHEW!

Hi, I notice a few of you are using the sage trial software for the course, which I have too.

My problem is I have started the mock exam and fallen at the first hurdle. It won't let me print out the employee details.  Have any of you tried to print it yet? It just comes up 'incorrect path' or something. Just wondering if it is because it is just the trial version.

This is the third package I have used as I tried to do it on the basic PAYE tools and 12pay free versions and couldn't get it to prin from them either.

This exam is driving me nuts! Promised a client I would start their payroll after the Summer (hoping to have done the exam by then) but keep hitting this problem every time!Frown

Thanks

Hi Carole,

I have the Sage Trial software and I am able to print out the Employee details report ok.  Admittedly I was having trouble with some of the format of the reports, it was set to landscape but was only viewable in portrait, but if I saved them to pdf and then printed they were fine.

Are you going to Employee - Maintain Existing Employees -  Print Details ?  It then asks if you want to print all your employees' details?

What exactly is the error message you are getting?

Do you have any other Sage software installed?

Help!

Does anyone know how to print off a portrait page of all the employee details in Sage 50 Payroll 2011?  I think the instructions from Stardoe are for Sage Instant Payroll?  Currently on to SageCover and they tell me there is no such report for 50 Payroll.....they are trying to convert the Sage Instant Payroll report to Sage 50 Payroll.....

I can't believe Sage 50 Payroll focuses on a report for all employees regarding one element - for example deductions and doesn't let you report from the employees perspective for all elements!!  Oh well it looks like I need to learn how to design my own reports!!!

Hello, wondered if you could help me, I am looking to complete the Payroll Mangement qualification using the SAGE instant payroll self study guide for around £40.00, with the 180 day trial. Would this get me through the final exam, i.e. with print outs etc, as I have used a free software beforehand, and got just under the pass rate.

Looking for a cheaper alternative to all the courses on offer.

I would appreciate your help on this.

Kind Regards

Angela

Hi Angela,

Yes, this will be fine to get you through the exam.  It is what I used.  The 180 day trial should be plenty of time for you to study and complete the exam.  If it is Sage Instant payroll then you will be able to print the Employee details report that they ask for as well, which doesn't seem to be available in Sage 50 payroll.

Hope this helps  :-)

Hi

I actually bought the Sage self study Payroll workbooks 2 years ago but a project stopped me studying at the time so it has sat collecting dust.  Picked it back up last week (luckily I had level and and 2 so have a 2nd disc to use) and intend to study over the winter.  Like others I feel that using this along with HMRC website should be enough to get me through the exam.  Will let you know how I get on and will watch this thread with interest.
