Hi i have just sent my form off for my practice license and have received a call today from a hair dressing salon. They had a bookkeeper but for the past 3 years she never completed any tax returns and none of the p.a.y.e was done for the self employed hairdressers so i am just wondering if i would be covered to do paye as an associate member before i make an appointment to go and see her? and this would be my first client and things do sound very messy would anybody advise i take this on with it being my first actual job or would i be in over my head?

Hi Nicki

A few points

  1. You should not be doing any kind of payroll until you have completed the payroll exams and have the PM.dip letter after your name
  2. You should not be filling in tax returns until you have completed the self assessment exams

As an associate you can complete the books and final accounts for a sole trader. My worry is you do not seem to understand the difference between an employee and a self employed person from your post. I think it would be far more helpful for you to find a local accountant or practicing ICB bookkeeper that can help you gain experience before setting off on your own.

Kind regards
Stuart

Hi Stuart

Thank you for your quick reply now i know that i am not able to complete the paye.I do understand the difference and i know that they either have to be paye or self employed as they cannot be both but i am just repeating what the lady told me on the phone so i do not think she has any clue as to the accounts of the business.I have actually worked in the finance field most of my working life before having my children and am part qualified AAT and currently studying CIMA but i think i am actually afraid of going out there on my own so maybe i should just look for an employed position that allows me to work from home.

I think Stuart has picked up on your sentence which says"....none of the paye was done for the self employed ........" and his interpretation is probably fair as PAYE does not relate to the self employed.

On the question of qualification you are now a member of a regulated body so within that regulation you can carry out work up to the level of qualification. So you are not covered for either PAYE or Self Assessment until you have the relevant qualifications.

It is a big step to take in the self employed world and it can take a long time to get to where you want to be, sometimes, as some members have indicated, you only have to shake the tree and the clients fall out, in other cases you start chopping the tree down and find that it was the wrong tree.

I was employed for thirty two years and have been self employed for the last twelve. I much prefer the latter although even with that under my belt I am finding it tough in a climate which is difficult for us all.

Maybe try to combine what you are qualified to do (at whatever level) with something else whilst working towards higher qualification and at the same time building your confidence.
