Self assessment exams and Payroll Diploma exams - should they be yearly?

There was a brief discussion of this on another forum - but what are people's views on having to sit yearly update exams on the above two subjects. Unlike bookkeeping these two subjects change every year so if you've sat an exam say two or three years ago, a lot of it won't be relevent anymore as the rules will have changed.

Yes but part of the exam ought to be about where you find the latest information and in any case the exam doesn't cover the latest regs. I just took the PM exam and it was based on the 2009/2010 tax year so my qualificaton would be out of date already.

Not sure if it would be possible for the examiners to review the latest regs and produce an exam in the same tax year - the full implications of some budgets take 12 months or more to realise.

Perhaps not anually but a refresher exam might be better every 5 years, trouble is you never can tell when HMRC make major changes.

I agree that with both subjects being a moving feast the should be a mechanism to ensure our knowledge is always up to date.

As Mike says exams may not be the answer is it is too difficult to administer on an annual basis for me I think it should be dealt with one of two ways.

The institute could put in place a mechanism to update all those qualified in the subjects as new rules are enacted or old rules amended. The second way is to make it a compulsory cpd subject in order to retain the qualification.

Hi All,

I like Stuart's idea about the CPD & updates.

Surely if you've pased the exams in the first place (which I hope to do soon) you know the principals & then can be updated with the new regulations/figures?

Is would have said that by the very definition of CPD these topics are a candidate.
