Debt Collection Agencies

Hello

One of my clients is struggling to get debtors to cough up and is asking me to get on their case which I am unwilling to do, mainly because it is utterly out of my range of experience and I'm not sure where I'd stand legally. Can anyone recommend an agency or way of doing this for best results and low cost? Client is in Leeds.

Many thanks!

Alex

Hi Alex,

I believe we are qualified to provide credit control services, but if like me you don't like speaking to perfect strangers on the telephone where they have to opportunity to throw all kinds of abuse at you (I'm pretty thin-skinned), then it is not for you. Have a look on Google or Yell for debt management agencies and it should come up with plenty, however they might charge a hefty fee. Not sure your client would be happy with this.

No problem ALex, I have replied.

Lady M - you say that "I believe we are qualified to provide credit control services".

I would be interested to know what you think are the criteria for this, ie what qualifications are neeeded and why?

James @ ICB said:

“Hello all,

You would be qualified to offer Credit Control services, this would not be full debt collection like the agencies offer though (going to their house and taking furniture etc).

However, you would be within your Practice License to call companies and remind them they owe your client money. 9 times out of 10 this is all it takes, as many companies wont pay invoices until someone has phoned them to chase, and your client probably does not have time to do this.

If after a few calls they have still not paid you could write them a letter with a statement of accounts and mention you would refer the debt to a collection agency.

You should also keep your client up to date with who owes them money and who is slow at paying. This can help them run their business better by requesting larger deposits from poor payers, or upfront payments, or even ceasing services to the client.”

Totally agree with James.

Credit control is fairly easy. Some times these businesses have just lost or have never recieved your invoice. Sometimes they have bad cashflow.
It is always worth picking the phone up to your customers, sometimes you get gut feelings about how your are being spoken to, so then you can advise your client to put the account on hold untill you get paid.

I personally love that side of the job. You get a wee buzz when the money starts to flow in.

To answer another question I interviewed this company. www.cpa.co.uk
They are basically outsourced credit control company. They seemed quite nice.

Regards

Peter
