Hi Everyone,
Looking for a bit of advice, i have just started reading the ICB diploma in self assessment, i was hoping that i would be able to read the book and also use the HMRC website and this would be enough for me to do the exam!!! but i am now wondering if i should be paying to do the full course, has anyone who has done the exam do it by just reading the book or is it best doing the course, not sure what to do as i believe the pass rate is very high!!!
any help would be great

Hello Chrissy

I cannot comment on doing the exam from the book and the website, but I know a lot of people have.

I would personally say that if you are experienced in doing tax returns (and not just self employment) then you should find that you will be find using the book and HMRC website.

I personally, however, found a distance learning course invaluable.  It was good to have that feed back to ensure that I was going in the right direction.  It is 100% pass mark so you need to get everything right or else you have to pay the fee again which can prove more expensive in the long run.

Hope that has helped a little and not confused you more

Good Luck

Hi Sandra,
Which distance learning course did you take - I would definitely be interested as the book is great but I feel like I really need more knowledge to take the exam.
Many thanks,
Olga

I did all of my studies - including the SA one - through Ideal Schools.

Can't recommend them enough!!

Give Brian a call and he can talk you through what they offer.

I did the exam before any courses were available there was just the book from ICB. At that time you could still order all the various forms and guides from HMRC and they'd post them out to you. I didn't at the time think the book was enough without the other forms and guides so will have a lot of downloading to do if you do the course without a learning provider.

When you talk of pass rate - do you mean number of people passing the exam or the mark required to pass?
I think you have to achieve 100% to pass this exam. If you don't get that but are close they will send the paper back and give you a hint to where you went wrong and then you have to re-submit the paper. Or re-submit the bit you got wrong rather than the whole paper again.

Had the course been available from I.S. at the time I'd likely have done it with them as well. I prefer things set out for me to learn rather than me having to figure it out for myself - even though I did manage to do it myself.

Hi Olga,

I just did the self-assessment exam (and passed!), I don't have experience of submitting any self-assessment returns apart from my own and I used the book and HMRC guides.

As has been posted previously here, the pass mark is 100%, however, if you do the exam and get 85% or above, they will send the exam back to you with the examiner's comments on where you went wrong, then you have to write a report on how you got the mistakes wrong and what you should do to correct them, based on this report the examiner will decide whether or not you have fully understood what went wrong and either give you a pass or fail but your original mark will stay the same.

Hope that clears things up.
