Hi

I hope this helps some business affected.  Please advise your clients especially if they have been under insured or not insured.

The Riot ( Damages ) Act 1886 applies to any house , shop or building which has been damaged , or had its contents damaged, by "any persons riotously and tumultuously assembled together ".

It must be least 12 people to be classed as a riot.

The police are required to pay compensation to any person who has suffered losses as a result , including those who have had property stolen .

VERY IMPORTANT

A special form , attached to the back of the 1921 statutory Instrument must be used . Please see link and the form is near the bottom. It must be claimed within 14 days of the riot

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksro/1921/1536/pdfs/uksro_19211536_en.pdf%20

Evidence of losses must be supplied , and the person claiming is usually required to swear on oath that their claim is genuine . The form must be sent to either the clerk to their local police authotiry , or the clerk to the county council, depending on which police district is involved.

Hi Sarah

Thanks a lot for sharing that.  Thankfully not relevant at the moment, but very useful to know.

Didn't hear of any trouble north of the border then?!

Regards

Andrew

The Home Secretary, Theresa May, suggested yesterday that they may increase the 14 day limit to 48 days as the government believe that due to the level of disorder damages will not be able to accurately determined in a fortnight.

Scotland remained safe this time, except edinburgh which experienced an uprising: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW0356brnrE

Just seen a load of riot vans outside the local police station and they were putting on their kit, basically they were ready to go, doors open and standing by them.
Last night saw 15 riot vans in convey heading into SE London from E London. Monday night my eldest (only 5) saw it starting to kick off at the bottom of the road and has had nightmares since. Virtually all the shops are now open and the boarding down, police are everywhere. Alot more sirens going in the last 30 minutes, been relatively quiet today and thankfully no helicopter overhead! at least for now anyway, hope it stays that way.

I dread to think how much damage they have caused but I get the feeling people are supporting small businesses round where I am at least.
