ICB Self Assessment qualification

Please would you clarify what this qualification will allow you to do?

I have done my own tax return online for years and I assumed that this qualification would allow me to enter the clients information into an online SA that they then log in, authorise and submit.  Now I think it will only allow me to put the relevant figures onto a paper return that the client would then need to sign and submit by the paper deadline (or copy onto the online SA themselves).  Is this correct?

Would you be able to apply for the agent status with HMRC for a client so you could enter the information and they submit it, it looks like agents are accountants and tax advisers rather than bookkeepers?

I find it strange that with HMRC wanting everything done electronically that this qualification only lets you fill in bits of paper!!!!  Am I missing something - I hope so!  (No rude comments to that last statement please!!!Tongue out)

Many thanks

Karen

I think I had to write to HMRC to be set up as an agent for SA, check the website to see how to set yourself up as agent.

Good luck.

You need to be set up as an agent with HMRC. You may also need to ask your clients to fill a form (64-8 I think from memory) to authorise you to act on their behalf. That will allow you to communicate directly with HMRC on behalf of the client.

Thank you all for your responses.  I hoped it was the registering as an agent route....I will look into that once I have passed the exam!!!

Many thanks

Hi Karen
Registering as an agent is very easy and as I understand it very common amongst bookkeepers as well as accountants and tax advisors. I'm a registered agent for VAT for most of my clients. Just one thing to remember is that when you are intiially applying to be set up as an agent it takes some time for authority codes etc to be sent out by HMRC so don't leave it until the last minute. Apply as early as you can to give them time to send out the appropriate information.

It took me almost a full year to register as an agent for self assessment.  The department responsible for issuing the code don't have a phone, or a fax, or email so you can only write to them.  They lost my letter 3 times before I finally managed to get the code, so leave loads of time.

Wow Kris, I know I said leave some time but a year!!! That's ridiculous! I believe the central agent team now have a telephone though - they've hit the 21st century at long last - so can be chased up.

Just pulling this thread up from the bowels of the Forums.

Has anyone applied for an HMRC agent code recently? I sent my letter in about 6 weeks ago and heard nothing.  Chased it tonight and they have no idea of a turnaround time and the Agent Authorisation team still have no telephone number apparently.Yell

I have just recently got mine and I applied in November. It took two chase letters (by recorded delivery) to chase it up. The funny thing is I got a call back from a lady at HMRC when issing the authority and she was very apologetic and said they never have trouble normally....info on here indicates the opposite!

Thanks Gina,

I'll follow up with a colourful letter in big letters, hopefully I can get their attention.

Hi,
I registered as an agent some years ago now but can't remember how.  I thought i did it over the phone. The agents only phone number which is a direct line for agents queries is 0845 366 7880. Maybe they can tell you the best way to go?

Regards

Karen
