Registering with HMRC as self employed

Hi

I am applying to update my membership, and obtain the practice licence with the aim of being up and running by October.

What i am confused with is the HMRC CWF1 Self Employed form, it states:-

"You should tell us as soon as you start working for yourself (you cant register in advance)"

On the HMRC site it also says that "If you dont tell them, you may have to pay a penalty"

My question is when do you register with HMRC?

Any comments would be appreciated.

Regards

Hi,

You need to inform H M Revenue & Customs within 3 months of when you start to trade. Other wise you will end up with a penalty.

I think that the "three months" no longer appears anywhere on HMRC documentation.

You can register as self employed whenever you want really, you don't have to be taking any income so even if you don't have your practice licence there is nothing to stop you being classed as self employed, the practice licence merely covers you for carrying out work within the realm of your appropriate qualification and level etc.
