Printing from Sage - help required please!

Does anyone out there know how to change the default printer on Sage?  When we installed Sage Instants last year we were using printer x.  Now printer x has died and I have installed printer y.  However when I go to print invoices and statements it automatically defaults to printer x and I have to select printer y from the drop down menu on the print properties page.  It's getting very frustrating.

I did remove the printer entirely from the computer itself and this resulted in the invoices not printing at all, because the default printer did not exist.  I have had to re-install the old printer driver to bring back the option to print at all!

There must be some way of changing the default printer on Sage but I've looked everywhere.  Can anyone help?

Thanks very much.

Hi Debsie

Have you set Printer Y as your default printer in the control panel?  If not, you need to go to 'Devices and Printers', select Printer Y, right-click and then select 'Set as Default' -- making this the default printer on your computer (meaning no matter what application you're in Printer Y will always be the first on the list).

Hope this helps

Hi Infinite,

Thanks for your reply. Yes printer y is set as the default printer in the control panel.  I think my problem  is something to do with the set up of the invoice and statement as a' repor't, as when I went to print something from the Sage help page it defaulted to printer y.

Confused!!

From what you're saying, the only thing I can think of is:

  • select the report in question
  • click 'edit' to open the report designer
  • click 'Printer Offsets' in the toolbar
  • Change the printer in the new dialog box

Let me know if this does the trick!

I had already tried that, but to be sure I just tried it again.  When I change the selected printer in printer offsets and click OK it doesn't retain this change. When I go back into printer offsets it defaults back to the original printer!

We don't have the Sage technical support service otherwise I'd ask them.  Any other ideas?

Hi Infinite

I think I've finally solved the problem - when you are in report designer there is also an option to print, and if you select the printer of your choice and click on save whilst still in report designer it seems to save the setting.

Fingers crossed!!  Thanks very much for your advice.

Kind regards

Great news!  Where Sage is concerned it does sometimes feel as if you're a developer as well as a bookkeeper!  Still debating which bookkeeping software to use -- I like Sage but feel I should test-run other options.

What are your thoughts?

I like Sage (apart from the cost), and it's heaps better than TAS Books, but otherwise I don't really have any experience of others.  I don't like the idea of cloud accounting, particularly after the Microsoft glitch last night.

I've been recommended VT+ and Quickbooks by other ICB regional group members but haven't had a chance to look at them.

The only reason I would move from Sage would be to get software that I coud run several companies on, rather than pay a new Sage license each time I want to add a new company.
