Business related travel and no driving licence

Hi,

I was wondering if any of you is in the same position as me.

I have no driving licence so everytime I have a business related travel I rely on my partner.
I don't think claiming 0.45p per mile is appropriate in this situation...

Thanks,
Aleksandra

Hi Alekasandra

I dont understand why you do not think it is appropriate to claim mileage when your partner drops you to a clients site.

If you got a taxi or the bus, tube, train etc you would be able to claim all those fares.

As long you can demonstrate that you are contributing to the running costs of the car I think you should have no problem claiming the milleage expenses.

Have you spoken to HMRC and got their opinion on the subject.

Kind regards
Stuart

Hi Stuart,

I went to the HMRC workshop some time ago and asked that question, this is what I've heard in reply:

"I don't think it's appropriate. I reckon you should get a driving licence young lady."

Hi Alekandra

Perhaps they were just trying to be funny otherwise that just plain rude.

I would call the HMRC helpline.

Kind regards
Stuart

Hi all,

I asked this very question also in an HMRC business expenses seminar.

The answer I received, is basically 'you are not incurring the cost wholly and exclusively in the course of your business'.

However a taxi or bus receipt would be allowable as you had paid for a service in the course of your duties.

My example was a client who did not drive but partner drove her to the airport for business flights.

Whilst I appreciate that the answer given at the HMRC seminar may be correct, could it not be argued that any mileage claim could be disallowed the grounds of not wholly and exclusively for the business.

Also the comment of 'get a driving licence' I think is totally out of order. I think that I would have to have made a formal complaint to HMRC.
