Hi All,

I think it's about time I built a website, can anyone recommend a place to have a website built or where I can build one myself, preferrably for free or low fee?

Thanks in advance!

I have just had my website built by a company called Anlyns.. amazing, patient and really helpful. For a logo design AND website it has cost me £100!!! A small price to pay for such good service!

Hi there,
I am new to the forum, having recently launched my bookeeping and accountancy support franchise business in North Hampshire.   I use Apple products, and there's an iWeb package that lets you create your own web site.  I've watched the demo video, and it looks like you can get some pretty professional results in a pain- and cost-free manner!

Hi,

Personally I would steer clear of free websites, they tend to stick their logo on your page.  For me it's the same as only using a mobile number for your business or a yahoo email address.  It suggests to me that people are dipping their toe in the water, and refusing to make a proper commitment.  Add to that the hidden costs, take the Google one for instance.  £50 a year is a lot.  If you think that you can get a domain name for a few pounds a year, and hosting for £1 a year.  Thats less than a fiver.  Thats £150 over 3 years for a free site and £20 for a paid for site which you own the domain for.

If you head to peopleperhour or digitalpoint you'll find someone to design your site for next to nothing.  The most important part, I would suggest, are the word.  Thats what search engines will find.  Fancy graphics are all well and good, but if you rank bottom few people will see them.

Hope this has given you something to think about.

Regards

Kris

Hi Liz,

Having looked at the Getting British Business Online website, I can see it is £17.95 per year after the first.  Given that, it is not hugely expensive.

I was not attempting to pass judgement on anyones website, or indeed how they run their business.  My comments were an expression of my own personal feelings.  Many of my clients host their site with a local host who charges £1 per year for 100MB of webspace and a few email addresses, more than enough for most small business websites.

The point it was trying to make is that I don't beleive that you need a website thats going to win design awards.  I beleive that more important is the content, and it is the content, and not the design which will push you up the google rankings and therefore get you visitors and in return clients.

I would wrap everything I have said in caveat.  That is that in my opinion almost (not all) any website, is better than no website at all.

Hi Lady M

Can't recommend anyone I'm afraid but watch out that:

- you plan the structure (sitemap) first
- you have ownership of the domain
- you have ability to edit content
- you don't expect to get loads of new clients straight away
- if you do it yourself you know how to get the site noticed by Google

These points (among many others) were recommended from a recent BusinessLink meeting.

Andrew

Hi Lady M,

I would take andrew advise should you wish to built your own site. I have viewed few Good site built from templates.

I am on a process of building mine. Company using templates i would recommend is www.one.com. it is american but the support is available 24 hours through chat room. Set up fee is 10 pound, free first year, 18 USD per month after that, for 3 gb space and you get google adword.

As Andrew quoted above make sure you are aware of how you can optimise your website.

All the best,Wink
