Self assessment - software

Hi

I have just got my practice licence and one of the services I am planning to offer is completion of self assessment tax returns. I am studying for my self assessment diploma now! I am wondering, does anyone use software to help with filling out tax retuns (and submission to HMRC)? I spoke to SAGE the other day and they have a package called SAGE Instant Taxation, which costs £99 plus VAT for up to 10 clients. Or does anyone know of any other software that works and is good value at the same time?

Thanks

There are a few others around - I myself use Andica Self Assessment - I tried to purchase the Sage one - but you have to be a member of the AccountantsClub to buy that one.

Good luck with your exam!

Kind regards

If you just want Tax Return Software, then register as an Agent with HMRC and use their FREE software, which can be produced in a PDF, emailed to your client for approving, and then filed online, with good confirmation receipts.

If you want actual Software, then I thing Sage is very good value.  They may sell it to you if you become part of their Book-Keeping Club, which is cheaper than the Accountants Club, but you will need to check with them.  This would then also entitle you to a Bureau Licence for Payroll, and a 25 client Licence for Sage Line 50, and you also have the ability to pay over 10 months for the licences.

I have in the past used cheaper software, but I keep going back to Sage, as quite honestly their software is very goodSmile

Happy Hunting.

Hi, For the SA returns I use Tax Calc, www.taxcalc.co.uk the price is fair and the use is un-restricted. The database of notes is very useful. It is simple to use and has the option of having Personal Tax, Business tax, Partnership Tax or Corp Tax Returns. I have used this for nearly five years.

I looked into Sage and found it to be expensive and felt that I was constantly adding options.  Although I am in the accountants club and do use Sage Accounts 2012 and Payroll, Taxcalc was cheaper and is very easy to use. If you use VT sofware you can copy the tax return boxes and paste directly into taxcalc, an amazing time saver!

This is my own opinion and do not endorse any of the named products.

If you have any questions then please post.

Hi all

Thank you very much for your responses! I am probably being a bit slow..., but was does VT software mean? I have looked at Taxcalc but the fee is £450 plus VAT which is quite a big investment when just starting up. I will look into what HMRC has to offer and maybe invest in software once I have started to earn some money.

VT Transaction +
It is software that many bookkeepers use (as an alternative to Sage) as it can be used for multiple companies/sole traders/partnerships.
