Hi

In 4 weeks time im leaving my current full time job and going to take that big step towards attempting to set up my own practice.

Ive been doing the books for my partners business on weekends but im after some advice or hints and tips from anyone who can point me in the right direction. I already have a Practice Licence and PII.

I have got my business cards, set up a website and registered on the freeindex website so what i want to know is, Can anyone help me with anything else i can do???

I was going to go around my local industrial sites and do some flyers and maybe down through the local high streets to see if that takes off.

Has anyone found it useful to send blanket emails to the local accounting firms? If so can anyone help with wording etc?

Im also keen to gain some useful contacts in my local area so if anyone is in the Bristol/Bath vicinity and are interested then please dont hesitate to get in touch.

Thanks

Hi Jo I was interested when I saw your post as not many people talk about email marketing. I would not recommend attempting email marketing to local accountants with a blanket email. Business email accounts get bombarded on a daily basis with all manner of emails and unless you can make yours stand out within seconds it will invariably be ignored and deleted. You would be better creating a more personal letter to them. Instead of spending time trying to find their email addresses, spend time finding out names of the partners so you send your letter to a person and not just a Dear Sir/Madam. With my first letter to accountants I simply introduced myself, the services I could provide and gave a brief career history. If you want to improve your chances you should be prepared to telephone everyone you have sent a letter to as well. As for flyers, they are a great way of letting local businesses know about your services and cheaper than letters (as no paper, envelopes and stamps to buy) and keep you fit too! Lol. Gaining clients when you first start out is hard work and some methods are more successful than others, you just need to be persistent & keep track of what you do so you can see what works. You could also keep a regular eye on Gumtree or the Reed websites as you sometimes find local businesses post adverts for part time bookkeeping help. Finally, postcard adverts in local newsagents, local magazines and papers. Hope I've helped a bit. Vik

Thanks Vik for your reply.

I will try and get a contacts list together of my local accountants and then see if as you suggested i can direct some personal letters to them.

Thanks for your response and the advice, Hopefully there will be a gain to it all in the end!
