Hi - have this week sent off my application for my practice licence and been informed can take up to 28 days to be processed. Am at a bit of a loss as to what to do for the next month (not working as I was - or rather my role was - made redundant in the summer) - can't start working til have my practice licence, can't advertise without it etc. etc. etc. Am working my way through Level 3 and started making "prospect lists" but wondered if anyone had any thoughts on anything else productive/proactive I can be doing? You don't need the physical licence to start working or advertising. As soon as it is ok'd phone them up for the number. I assume you'll know as it will change the wording under your name to reflect the change of status.

I agree with Peasie.  I contacted ICB a week after I'd sent my application off and was given my number.  Put all your advertising in place so that all you have to do once you have your PL Number is press enter/say 'go' etc.!

I'm also waiting for my Level III but that hasn't prevented me from talking to prospective clients.  Where Ltds, Partnerships etc. are concerned, they are fully aware that I can only go to Trial Balance at my current level of membership.  If successful with Level III then I'll upgrade my membership and clients are already in place!

Hope this helps and good luck

Thanks both - should I have my letter of engagement in place and MLR forms etc ready too?

I was hoping to get guidance on these from the pack with the practice licence, but not sure whether I need them all in advance.

Have potential first client waiting for me to be up and running but don't want to miss anything.

Once you have your Practice Licence, you'll have access to the Practice Licence area where you'll find an sample Engagement Letter as well as info on MLR.

You'll also receive an MLR Guidance Manual from the ICB (which is quite scary when you first go through it).  The ICB are extremely helpful when it comes to this (and everything else for that matter!).

At this stage, check out the MLR page on the site etc. so that you have an idea of what to expect as well as what your obligations are.

This is what I did as I too had clients in the pipeline!

Well I now appear to have a practice licence :-) although no idea what the number is.  My first task tomorrow.

Thanks for your advice - letter of engagement task two.
