Studying Self Assesment - question

I have just started working through the ICB Self Assessment Manual and I have a question from Chapter 1.  Tax on bonuses from employment.  Assuming part employed and filling in SA form.  The manual says the "Bonuses are assessed at the time when they are paid or when the employee is entitled to them, which ever is the earlier".  My employer pays me the bonus and deducts the PAYE tax next year. Therefore the bonus is included in the figures on my P60 for next year but the manual says they are assessed this year.  I am confused, so I hope this is clear. Can someone explain please.
