Bankruptcy

Hi there

I am hoping to start a Bookkeeping course with the ICB. However, i was made bankrupt in 2009 and subsequently discharged in 2010.

I notice that the student registration asks if you have ever been made bankrupt. I just wondered what the policy is on bankruptcy. Have my chances been scuppered before i've even started? Frown

Thanks for your time.

James @ ICBsaid:

“Hi Hulahoop,

It is handled on a case by case bases. Contact the ICB and ask for the policy to be emailed to you.

You can write to the ICB giving details of your case and it will be reviewed.

This does not affect your Student Registration, it is only regarding membership. ”

Thanks for your reply James, I will do as you suggest. I am hoping that I will still be accepted for membership as the bankruptcy wasn't due to fraud or reckless behaviour. In the event that I am not accepted, as it does not affect student registration, does this mean I could still study and take the exams? I'm just trying to get my head round this.

The other issue I think I would have would be getting the liability insurance if I came to trade...does anyone have any experience of this?

“Hello,

Yes you could still study and sit the examinations.

I could not comment on the insurance as I guess they would also look at it as a case by case basis.

More than likely if the ICB accept you into membership then you should be able to get insurance through their recommended provider. ”

Thanks very much for your help James...i'll wait to hear from the ICB and take it from there.

Hi,

Just to ease your mind I am a member of the ICB and have completed all my manual exams and level 2 of the computerised exams and have MICB status.  I did have a practise license but haven't renewed as I am currently employed full time by a local company.

I was also declared bankrupt in 2002 and back then you weren't discharged for 3 years so mine didn't end until 2005.  I spoke to the ICB about it at the point of registration and they asked my to send copies of all my bankruptcy papers and a letter detailing how I ended up in the situtaion of being bankrupt.

I sent all the details off and received a lovely letter back saying they were happy to grant me membership.  I think when I applied for the insurance for a practise licence I also had to send details to them as well but again it didn't affect me being able to get the insurance.

I was even nominated for the Luca student of the year award in 2009 and got to go to the awards dinner which was fantastic, so please don't let this stop you trying.

Kind Regards

Anna

Hi Anna, Thank you so much...my eyes actually filled with tears reading your reply, you have given me a little ray of hope. I'm so pleased to hear that the bankruptcy hasn't held you back, congratulations on what you have achieved! I will keep waiting for that letter from the ICB and hope it is a positive letter. I will keep you posted :)

I have received confirmation that I will be able to join the ICB and start studying! I am over the moon and can't wait to get stuck in! I need to decide now who to study with...i'm leaning towards Ideal Schools but I think I will phone a couple of providers before making a decision. Very happy :)

That's great news! Congratulations Smile

I, for one, can vouch that Ideal Schools are a good choice!

Good luck and all the best.

Hi Hulahoop, congratulations, you may also want to consider training link, for the whole cherbang costs over £ 1,200 - but that includes Levels 1, 2 and 3 Manual and Computerised, and Payroll. You don't have to pay for them all at once, and they do (or they did) allow you to pay on monthly terms.

I past first time with them, and I had assignments marked the same day as submission, even on a Sunday.

That's great news, well done.  I can also vouch for Ideal Schools as they were my training provider and they were brilliant.  In 2009 when I was nominated for the luca student of the year award, they were also nominated for the training provider of the year award, which they won.  Although I didn't win my award, the lady who did win it was also one of thier students.

But whatever you chose I wish you the best of luck with your studies and please keep us updated about how you are getting on.

Kind Regards
Anna

Hi Anna,

I missed your first post in this thread as I was just getting back into the swing of things after the latest ICB Conference. Al still speaks warmly of his time at the 2009 awards and I hope that things have been going well for you since. I met with Shirley at the conference in November, a true gem, and hopefully we can also meet at future ICB events.

Hi Hulahoop,

Great news that you're able to gain ICB Membership, and you are doing the correct thing is shopping around and finding a course and provider that suits you. By emailing or phoning providers directly you'll get a real feeling of what they can offer.

Good luck with your search.

Kind regards

thanks Mike! At the moment I am considering both Ideal Schools and Training Link, although there doesn't seem to be much in it. Very pleased to hear you passed first time. All the best

Hi  Hulahoop, agreed there probably isn't a lot between the good training providers, I have no particular axe to grind for either provider. I would just like to express the wish that you find a provider that works for you.

Good luck with your studies and welcome to the group, as a new member myself they sound like a good group of people to know.

I too am having difficulty working out who to go with. I am running out of notepaper. What was the deciding factor for you?

Hi Milly, it was a difficult decision because there wasn't much between Ideal Schools and Training Link. I've read good things about both providers. I think I went with Ideal Schools because they were the company I first thought i'd go with and i've got a good feeling about them. From reviews i've read they are very supportive and the course documentation sounds comprehensive and straight forward.

Good luck Milly making your choice. I look forward to hearing how you're getting on

Hi Hulahoop
Thank you so much for getting back to me. Gut feelings go a long way with me too but I have to trust my mind and common sense as well so its going to be a long haul. i do find some of the information available a bit misleading and in some cases too good to be true which usually turns out to be the case.
I will let you know how I get on. Perhaps I will be an expert advisor by the time i have finished.

Thanks again and good luck.
