Does anyone know where I can locate a definitive list of VAT Rates on different expense items, e.g.

STANDARD RATE
Petrol
Stationery
Advertising
etc....

REDUCED RATE
Domestic Gas
Domestic Heating Oil
etc....

ZERO RATE
Public Transport
Water by meter
Newspapers
etc....

EXEMPT
Postage
Bank Charges
etc...

OUTSIDE THE SCOPE
Wages
National Insurance
etc....

Can't seem to find such a list on the HMRC website.

When this tax was created in 1973, everything was simple, and sat in Notice 700 - The VAT Guide
Successive budgets have made that meaningless, but most general subject areas are covered in the above link.

Thanks for that, but I already printed that page off in my relentless search for a more comprehensive list.

That's probably as good as we'll get from HMRC, so it's maybe a case of producing your own list by reviewing the thousand and one different pages regarding VAT Rates. Thanks anyway PeteL, it's appreciated.

Davie,

Most items will slot into the guidance notes without too much thought.
If you have something that really is causing concern, ring the HMRC Help line in Southend for an adjudication.

- Remember to ask for a call reference as it won't be offered automatically; the answer given will be sufficient to defend your treatment, if questioned at inspection.
