Items that you don't have a VAT receipt/invoice for?

Hi

In brief, my client is VAT registered. Some of his expense receipts have no VAT number and yet some of the items definitely are VAT rated. If I can't enter the VAT amount that he has paid what VAT code should I enter (Sage)?? I accept that he cannot claim it without a valid VAT receipt/invoice

Many Thanks

Hi Sandra,

I would process these receipts with ‘T0’ (zero) tax code as the goods that the receipts relate to are neither exempt nor outside the scope. This will also ensure that the correct information is shown on the VAT return (Box 7). Hope this helps.

Hi Sandra

May seem onerous however it is possibly worth while for you to double check with the supplier.

It could well be that although the item is Vat rated, the Supplier might not be Vat registered.

On the other hand some purchase receipts will not show the Vat breakdown unless the Client has asked for a VAT Receipt.  For example ....Tesco.

Just a foot note - do you have your Practice Licence yet?  Just that it is not showing, and you could get into trouble with the ICB if you have clients without it.

Kind regards

It would also be worth checking with the supplier if they are VAT Registered and ask for a note of their VAT number.  It would not be the first time that a company has not realised their VAT number is not pritned on their stationery.  Sometimes it is even on a really daft place on their stationery i.e. some retailers have it on the back of their till receipts in among all the other small print.

Hi

Thank-you to all of the above. Some of the receipts are indeed Tesco's; others are car park tickets which seem to be a bit of a mystery to most people. According to HMRC some can be VAT, some not. As we are currently talking about a few 50p's and £1's here and there I am not going to chase the issuing bodies to find out about the VAT.Thank-you also for the comment re Practise Licence. I did speak to ICB yesterday about it and also Indemnity Insurance so it hopefully I will have it in a couple of days.

Many Thanks

Hi Sandra

There’s no VAT on on-street parking, which at least that part of it easy. Off-street is difficult, as it varies and almost none of them give VAT receipts as a matter of course – and as you say, most people are unlikely to chase for small amounts of money.

Supermarkets are awkward, but if you look at their receipts, Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s do at least put a star beside those items on which they are charging VAT (although that might not be the end of the story, as the total VAT-able figure might be reduced by special offers which are only at the bottom of the receipt).

Hi

As i understand it offstreet car parking is standard rating (also excess charges) - can i ask, what should legally be shown on the car park ticket for vat purposes.

Unfortunately, offstreet parking is not always standard rated. Multi-storey car parks will be, but with other car parks the only way to find out is to check with the provider (unless it’s on the receipt, which is pretty unlikely).

So complicated; and that's just car parks covered!
