Hi All,

I am looking setup a new practise with the name IBS Accounting and was wondering wether it there would be any implications of using the word "accounting" in the business name ie is it allowed by the ICB.

I have to agree with James here that although the use of the word Accounting is permitted, it's possibly not wise to use it for the reasons that he stated. I have a friend who is a bookkeeper (unqualified and not registered with a professional body) who uses the phrase "Accounting Services" in his name and most enquiries he receives are from people seeking an accountant, not a bookkeeper. He is stuck now as he has stationery etc all printed with the name on, his adveritising is all with that name on, yet he is not being asked to do the kind of work he wants to do.

Maybe it's worth googling other companies with similar names to those you may use and see what services are associated with them...

I thought people were using these names in the hope of getting the best of both worlds. Using words like "Accounting Services" is not saying you are an accountant, although there is nothing stopping anyone from saying they are.

I think in my friends case he did want the best of both worlds when he set up but he very quickly realised that he doesn't have the knowledge or the skills to offer "Accounting" in the sense that clients mean. I guess it depends on how skilled you are but I personally wouldn't be comfortable with clients thinking that I can offer the same levels of expertise in certain areas that accountants do. In fact, I emphasise to clients that I am not accountant, will never be an accountant and don't want to be an accountant... do you think I protest too much????
