Hi Steve,

Just checking if you have a practice licence first?

Also it may be helpful if you can fill us in a bit about your marketing strategy to date.  There are a huge number of advertising methods, but there is no point listing them if you've already tried.

It's also worth sitting down and imagining your perfect customer.  It might sound a bit airy fairy but unless you know who you are targeting, how do you know where to reach them.  Targeted advertising is always better than the scattershot methods.

Let me know, and I'll put together a list of other methods to try, and I'm sure others will do likewise.

Best of luck

Hi Kris

Thanks for your reply. I've had a licence for 13 months now.

I have tried the normal advertising, and last month joined a web site community for Manchester & Cheshire professionals which has cost £500 for a years membership.

I have written to local accountants to see if they have any surplus work but didnt even get any replies.

Thanks

I have a meeting with my first prospective client on Friday, this came about through dropping some cards into a couple of accountants and the local business gateway.  Oddly the person I am meeting with is not one of the companies I dropped a card into but a related company to one of them.

I have also placed ads in touch local, thomson local online, the local council online business directory, yell.com, freeindex and posted flyers in the local post office, convenience store and the 2 local hot food takeaways who cater to both the passing and local white van man trade.

I am also going to be putting an advert in the local quarterly free magazine as it has quite a high readership (if they ever get back with a quote)  these flyers and magazine ad are targeted to try to attract local indviduals who are subcontractors and the ads show the CIS returns service as that is part of the market I want to target as most of my experience is in the construction side of bookeeping and accounting.

All the bove advertising i have carried out so far, except the magzine ad  for which  I am still awaiting a quote has been free with the exception of 1 shop which charges £1 a week for displaying the flyer.

I don't think I've ever got any work from adverts, my main source of customers is netwokring. Have you tried it? People buy from people so by putting yourself out there, hopefully you can start to make relationships that will turn into work.

I have also volunteered to be treasurer for a couple of societies locally and have had some work develop from that.

Hi Steve, I've been in practice since 2008 and have found that my website has brought in the most clients. I use a basic site developed from Office Live and have linked this to Freeindex.

I also dropped flyers into businesses but have found the majority of people now look online. If you do get a website make sure you use good keywords that clients are likely to use in their search.

Hope this helps along with the other replies.
