"Why do you think potential client's are reluctant to hire a professional bookkeeper?"

All answers are welcome.

Oh, I like these questions.

I don't think they are always reluctant. I think sometimes they don't know what they need. People often set up a business and think "right, I need an accountant", we need to be there to say "no".

Another problem is that clients don't always appreciate that bookkeeping is a profession. They sometimes know a wee lady down the road who keeps the books for a local business or two at night. It doesn't matter that she's never had any training or fumbles her way through making it up as she goes along, a bookkeeper is a bookkeeper after all.

The biggest group are the "how hard can it be?" group. They've got the software, read a book, they know how to do it. And suddenly a year or so down the line they're in a right mess.

Thanks Kris for your answer. Your input is very interesting and one that I will that note of. There must be other bookkeepers willing to tell me their theory or take account from their past experience.

money, money, money

I think Kris is right, but would like to add:

......... in the group that cannot get their heads around having to pay for something that doesnt help to bring in income.

e.g. Paying wages to a member of staff, say a barman in a pub is fine as the drinks would serve themselves, but having to bring in a bookkeeper is a step to far for some businesses.

Fortunatly most of my clients recognise the need for a bookkeeper and as one keeps saying "if it wasn't for you I wouldn't have time to do all the proper work."

Hi Liz D,

Thank you for your input. I agree with what you have added, but your response strikes a cord and I have to say is the best I have heard so far.

Kind regards

David

I find people think they need an "auditor" or an "audit" or someone to "sign off the books". People don't understand what seems obvious to us.
