Can I run Sage instant at home too?

I have a new client who bought the latest verion of Sage Instant and loaded it onto their computer just before they came on board with me.  I don't have any software of my own, as my clients are all either manual, excel or xero.  The client lives about 15 miles away, so I am wondering if I would be allowed to load their version of Sage Instant on my computer at home to save my client the cost of me travelling to their house to work.  It is a brand new genuine Sage cd and I would be the only user, as they took one look at it and panicked when they first loaded it on (that's why they called me).  All I would do is visit every few months and backup their version from my flashdrive.  Anybody know if this is allowed?

Hi Andrea,

I think the software has something in it to stop you loading it twice as it is a single user license.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think once your client installed it it will classify as installed and you won't be able to use the same disc to download it to your own pc.

Hope I'm wrong!

Hi Debbie.

I called Sage today about this and got two completely different answers. First guy said, " you need another licence, £50 plus VAT, I'll put you through," spoke to Licences department, and she said that - as long as the client wasn't entering any data on their copy (which they won't be) then I wouldn't need an additional licence.

They will allow the two versions of the same software to be activated on the understanding that the client's copy is used purely as a back-up.  So I'm very pleased.  If pushed into another licence, I would have gone on ebay and picked up a slightly older version of instant as it would have been cheaper. Although I'm not sure if this actually works.

Hi Andrea,

You're right, this wouldn't have worked.  You would have been able to restore data from your older version into the newer version of Sage, but you then wouldn't have been able to restore back from the newer to the older version.  (Not sure if you would have wanted to do this anyway, but if you did you wouldn't have been able to).  Sage converts the data when uploading to the newer version and it is not backward compatible.

Thanks, Pauline.  I thought this might be the case but wasn't sure.

I have a client who has 2009 version and I understand ( from reading this thread) that I would not be able to back up onto my 2011 version as it is not compatible?
Can you load 2 different versions onto the same computer or would I have to uninstall my version?

I will be the only user.

Thanks

Yes, you can load different versions of Instant and Sage 50 as well. I have had 6 versions of Sage 50 and 2 versions of Instant....follow the instructions of custom install.

That's interesting.  Because when I have spoken to Sage about this, they insist you can only run one version of any of their software on a single PC.    But I'm sure its all about which directories it looks at and these can be changed.  So obviously you can do that during a custom install then?

Not that I need it now but you never know when the need may arise!

I have a client coming on board who is using Sage Instant, they want to keep it on their computer for viewing only, as I have 50 Acounts Plus on my laptop I thought I was going to have to install it on my young son's laptop which I was not too happy about.

I would be grateful if you could email me on info@dillonbookkeeping.co.uk to let me know how you go about adding Instant on without screwing up access to 50.
