Advice on hairdressers

Hi - welcome any thoughts/guidance on this one.

Have had a brief conversation today with a self-employed hairdresser - she works 2 days a week mobile and 3 days she has a chair in a salon.  My understanding is that she is self-employed in the salon and is paid by the salon owner a rate for each day (possibly each client).   She generally has regular days in the salon in order to enable her clients to book future appts.

Is there anything I should be aware of or watchful of before I have any further conversations about potentially doing her bookkeeping?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Lou

I do the books for a self employed hairdresser, and like your example, he works set day at a haidressers.  Although this seems strange being self employed and working at a set place I believe in hairdressing it is perfectly normal.  The hairdresser that I do the books/tax return for is paid 50% of the takings for each client he works on - it is set up so the 50% deduction covers rent, products etc.

If is worth running an employment status idicator (on the HMRC website, but I can't remeber where) to confirm that she is self employed (I checked and the hairdresser I work with is clasified as self employed).

Thanks Lucy - will run the self-employment checker if this progresses.

Hi Lou,

I also have a self-employed hairdresser as a client too. However, their way of working in the salon is they pay a weekly rent to the salon owner for the chair rental and then all their takings are theirs as income, and purchase all products etc themselves. The rent covers the use of the chair, electric, water, complimentary drinks for clients and the use of a junior trainee stylist (for washing hair, making drinks, washing off colours etc, so the main stylist can work more than one client at once). I know this is not applicable in your instance this time but it's just for you to be aware of another way of working.
