VAT on supermarket receipts

Hiya,

I was just wondering what you would do with receipts form supermarkets that are not VAT receipts - do not have a VAT breakdown.

For example, I have got some receipts from Icelands and Sainsbury's that do not mention VAT at all, and I can see on the icelands receipt that it has crisps on it, which I thought were standard rated.

It was my understanding that if there is no VAT receipt, then you cannot reclaim the VAT, so the whole (gross) amount would be debited to expenses and credited to bank. Is this correct? (even when the supplier is VAT registered like these supermarkets)

I have seen on a forum somewhere that tesco can produce a VAT receipt given the barcode on the normal receipt, is this something that is also true of the other supermarkets?

Thanks,

Cheryl

Although they may not be full VAT receipts, Sainsbury’s do mark with a star those items which are VAT rated. I’m not sure but I think Tesco’s might do the same.

Thanks Danya,

At lease it is comforting to know that with the sainsbury's receipts they must just be zero rated (no stars on there) . Any idea what I would do with the icelands receipt? (especially as I am pretty sure that at least one of the items would have VAT charged to it, but there is no mention of VAT on the receipt)

Also make sure the chit has the VAT number for the supermarket on - not all do, and no VAT number = no claim.

Hi
Yes, you can get brakdown of vat and if there is vat included has a star. Though the receipts don't appear to have the vat number, it in fact shown on the the back with HO address!

Sometimes the client has not kept the correct part showing the VAT number, so it is worth just being aware that occasionally they are not suitable as VAT receiptsSmile
