Bookkeeping for a franchise

Hi All

I may have a potential client (my first, so fingers crossed) and they have two franchises'. They only require bookeeping to trial balance so I'm ok there, however, I'm not sure if there are any differences between 'normal' companies and franchise accounts. Does anyone know or does anyone know where there may be advice on bookkeeping for a franchise please?

Thanks
Steve

HMRC has information that may be of relevance, and will certainly give you an idea of questions to ask: search their site for BIM57600 which gives further links, which give case-studies and scenarios.

Good luck.

I have been keeping the books of a burger king franchise for many years now. If you are bookkeeping to trial balance stage you should see no difference to bookkeeping any other business. The only "extras" you will probably see are invoices from the franchisor to your company, normally for a percentage of turnover. The cost of the franchise will probably be classified as an intangible assets and amortised in accordance with the franchise agreement. Hope this helps
