Up and running in bookeeping at the start...

Hi, I just need a little guidance on how best to join the ICB. I qualified with ACCA way back in 1999 with one of the top accountancy firms and have worked as an accountant in industry since 2001 - 7 yrs at a large private firm, followed by the last 3 years at a national hospitality business.

As my qualifications are over 2 years old they seem of little advantage, I also do not want to upset my current employers by asking them for referees as I would rather like to be able to offer the bookeeping services as soon as I tell them (in the current climate that might not go down to well). I have numerous contacts/ referees from my previous jobs, but again these won't be within the last two years.

So am I correct in thinking that I will most probably have to sit all the exams prior to being ready to go or will the above experiences help me at all. Assuming I have to sit all exams and assuming my knowledge (except payroll) is up to scratch I'm thinking it's a solid six months of work before I can start offering bookeeping services.
