Working from Home - Repair Cost on a boiler? Allowable or not

Hi Everyone,

This question was previously asked and from the HMRC rules the expense mentioned above is not fully allowable.

Now can anyone please re-confirm.

Kind Regards,

Nathalie

Here is what I found from the HMRC website regarding working from home -

You won't be able to get relief on domestic expenses that you're paying anyway - like your mortgage or council tax. You also won't be able to get relief for expenses that relate to both business and private use - such as your telephone line rental, or Internet access.

An expense is classed as something that is for business purposes only - a boiler would have to be repaired whether a business was ran from the house or not.

That is my understanding

I also found this on the HMRC website -

This is classed as a disallowable disallowable expense:

Repairs of non-business parts of premises or equipment; costs of
improving or altering premises and equipment.

Hi Terri

That should not be your your understanding as you are allowed claim expenses, you must prove the business element and take the %. I do not have time to go into detail.  But this has been covered on the forum in great detail.    A bolier would involve Capital Gains tax though.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your reply....

As Sarah confirmed we are allowed to claim as long as we can prove the business element.
The apportionement process apply in this case.

I have attended a HMRC workshop during which the apportionment of expenses was mentioned.

Kind Regards,

Nathalie

Ps Thanks Sarah Smile

Hi Terri

Don,t worry I know you were trying to help , it is a difficult area.  I think it is an area that should be covered more .  It does seem to cause a lot of difficulty,  that is why the article is better then me trying to explain it.

I agree, it's not something that my studies ever went into much detail over.  I have bookmarked the HMRC link to have a good read through when I have the chance.

Thank you

Terri
