Living and working abroad for the entire tax year

I have recently had an enquiry from a prospective client who is having conflict with HMRC over the submission of a 2010/11 Tax Return, whereby both 2009/10 and 2010/11 paperbase returns were submitted in the same envelope, yet HMRC only acknowledge receiving the 2009/10 return. Consequently he has received late filing fees and will soon begin to occur the £10 a day penalties if this is not sorted.

I have suggested that another 2010/11 return is submitted online asap to avoid further charges. My problem is that the client inquestion was living in Spain throughout the course of the entire tax year, working for his father's company in Spain and being paid cash each week. He has no foreign bank accounts.

As this income is not taxed through the UK, I believe the details should be included under 'other information'. Is this correct? If so, would I just put the total income received in euros for the year or do I need to add more information? I have not come across this situation before. Another Accountant has said he believe's no information needs to be declared, but I would really appreciate any other advice!

The client in question is now back in the UK working as self-employed as his father sadly passed away last year. Help please!

I phoned the ICB technical helpline and got the answer straight away. It's worth noting that if you do not get an answer to a question on here, possibly just because nobody knows the answer, the help line is very useful! Smile
