Payroll: leaver before frist April pay day

One of my payroll clients has emailed to say that one of their employees has left. This employee hadn't worked since January (they have a lot of casuals) and I've run the payroll year end so I have produced the P60 for last payroll year.

I'm not sure what to do, surely there is no point in producing a P60 where every field is blank, but at the same time it seems wrong not to do anything! What do you think?

I assume that you meant January 2012.

Therefore they have earned in the fiscal year 2011/2012 and therefore they will need a P60/P14 produced which needs to go on P35

Hi Adrian

Yes, I've already done the payroll year end including the P60 as at that point she was still an employee...so would you leave it at that and not have any leaving paperwork as such?

Hi Ruth,

When did they actually leave?  If they left in January then they should have had a P45 as only employees still working for the company at year end should have a P60.  If they left after year end then they should have a P45 as normal.

If they did leave in January then it may be worth ringing HMRC for advice as what to do.....good luck in getting through in under an hour though!

Hi Pauline

They were on a zero hours contract, so although the last work was done in January they have only just actually resigned, on 17th April. The P60s were done before then so they have been processed as on the payroll on 5th April (which they were). So they left this payroll year, having not worked or been paid in this payroll year (and there is no accrued holiday to put through).

Hmmmm.

Hi Ruth,

Similar to one of my clients.  Some of her employees are on a zero hours contract.  If the employee left on 17th April 2012 then that is in this financial year 2012-13 so will have needed a P60 at the end of the financial year 2011-2012 5th April and then a P45 on 17th April when she left, even if all the fields are zero.  I think you will need to file the P45 as HMRC may need to adjust her tax code if she has another job.

Hope this helps.

I hadn't thought about the HMRC side of it (as it happens this was her second job so its BR but that's besides the point!).

Thanks
