Diploma Small Business Financial Control

Hi All,

I was just wondering if anybody had done the Diploma in Small Business Financial Control and  if it enables you to do anything other than just get Dip SBFC after your name!! I'm doing Ideal School's Career Path and I get it thrown in. I know I'll get some exemptions (unit 1 2 and 3) but seems a lot of energy to put into something that doesn't let you do anything extra!

Thanks!

Hi Emma,

I did the Small Business Financial Control in 2006 through Angus College and was awarded a distinction by ICB.
However, I notice ICB have taken it off their list recently. It may not allow you to do anything other than use the qualification - ICB it was FC.Dip but it gives you a better understanding of the whole scenario of running a business which you can put to good use when advising clients. I had run my own business for many years (petrol stations, lounge bar, restaurant & post office) but had given that up. I decided I wanted to do bookkeeping as I could work from home so did the course just to see if there was anything new. Glad I did it as I really enjoyed it - so I would say 'yes' go for it - you have everything to gain and nothing to lose!
Best of luck!

Hi Emma,

Although the SBFC course will not enhance your bookkeeping knowledge or enable you to offer any additional services when operating as a bookkeepers, there are still very useful topics that are covered that will help you when dealing with small businesses. Topics such as cash flow forecasting, costing and pricing of products, amongst others will enable you to provide a certain amount of advice to your clients.

Although not heavily publicised by ICB it is still mentioned within their syllabus range, but you need to click on the syllabus option in the ICB site rather than hover over the link.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks Maralyn and Thanks Brian,

Well as long as it's adding to the list of things I can offer my clients then it's good. I just don't want to get to the end of the course and find that it hasn't actually enhanced my offering. I'd like to go on and study IFA afterwards as I want to be able to remove the need for some of my clients to go to an accountant after. Of course I haven't looked into it fully yet (and IFA may not do what I want) but it just seems that it might be better for me to concentrate my energies on that once I have completed PM and SA rather than SBFC. Although I guess it's just a 'nice to have' if nothing else...

Thanks again,

Emma
