Dear All,

Don't miss -
Presentation and meeting at 10:30 am next Wednesday, 19th September - Britannia Hotel, Primrose Hill Road NW3 3NA (10 minutes from Chalk Farm Tube Station, Camden)

THE DATA PROTECTION ACT FOR BOOKKEEPERS

A plain-speaking guide
Even the Information Commissioner admits the Data Protection Act can be hard to understand!
Do you know what you are legally responsible for when you process ‘personal data’ about your clients, your suppliers and employees?

And how the responsibilities are different when working for your clients?

Does it make any difference if you are working from home, rather than in the client’s office?

What if you’re doing work for an accountant?

This presentation will give you a ‘plain-speaking guide’ to what it’s really about - for bookkeepers.

Plus -
Data security
What the Data Protection Act says about safeguarding personal data –

  • that you keep on your laptop or on a flash drive in your pocket?
  • that you process via an on-line ‘cloud accounting’ package?
  • that you back- up onto ‘the cloud’?
How the Act affects your clients as well.
And what about visitors’ details when they register on your website? The Act has special requirements you must comply with too.
Come along next Wednesday morning and get the answers!
Places are limited so don't leave it too late.

Mac has a law degree and has given presentations and written articles about data protection, marketing and other topics for small businesses.  He has specially designed this presentation for bookkeepers.

Hope to see you all there!

That sounds like a very interesting talk and covers questions I have asked both the ICB and the Information Commissioner.

I just cannot make that day. Would Mac release a paper/ slides or even come do a talk at the Berkshire Branch meeting.

Thanks for this, Clare.  We’ll talk some more off-line.

My aim is to make the Data Protection Act clearer for everyone and to iron out some inconsistencies between what the Act actually says and what people say it says.  I also show the Information Commissioner’s interpretation of who is a data controller, who is a data processor and the actual implications for bookkeepers.

As explained in my email, Clare, the slides alone can’t give the complete picture.  This is one of several presentations I am giving so the hand-outs I prepared are naturally for the audience.  It would be great to meet you and fellow members in Berkshire as you suggested.

I hope others around London can fit in this meeting on Wednesday morning.   Data protection is an important area for professionals and our clients too, and not least for private individuals like each of us.

If anyone has any queries about Wednesday's meeting, do get in touch - mac.mcinerny@gmail.com

I would love to hear more about this, but living in rural Scotland it is hard to get to these meetings, any papers or information on the subject would be greatfully received.

Hi, Jymlyn –

I am not a golfer but you do live in a lovely part of rural Scotland.

I would like to help you but the hand-out I prepared is not written as a general briefing for everyone.  Right now my tutor is waiting for my last Level 2 assignment!   Can the ICB help you perhaps?

Good luck in your business

Hi, all –

I have had some positive responses from several members and I hope this explanation about the hand-out will help.

Really this is about wanting to avoid adding to the confusion that already surrounds the Data Protection Act.  There is a really critical bit for bookkeepers especially –

  • knowing the distinction between a data controller and a data processor and
  • understanding the impact of all this on bookkeepers, registering as data controllers under the Act, our engagement letters, data security responsibilities, etc.

Unfortunately, with the Data Protection Act nothing is straightforward and there isn’t a brief, simple way to explain it.

The DPA is often seen as a ‘dry’ subject, but I try to give a presentation which describes and shows it all clearly in words and slides, with examples from publications by the Information Commissioner’s Office and others.  Without that understanding from the presentation the hand-out could be confusing or misleading or probably both.

I certainly don’t want to add to the misunderstandings, mystery and confusion that exist already around this subject, even among government departments and other bodies.  Quite the opposite!

I was lucky to be invited by Meena and another associate to give presentations for them and was pleased to say yes on a personal basis.  This is purely private, voluntary venture - no money has passed hands!

I have been asked to give another presentation on data protection at an ICB branch meeting.  It's fairly nearby, in November, and will be advertised by the organiser in due course.

If you have any queries about the Data Protection Act, why not post a topic in the forum’s Chat Room?

Good luck
