want to study

Hi, I recently went back to work part time after being on maternity leave.  I've been interested in qualifying as a bookkeeper for some time and think now is the time to do it.

The massive problem for me is cost. i would love to do an online/distance learning course but an finding the fees (even when paid in installments) out of my budget.

Is it possible to self study at first and pay to take the exams? If so, can anybody recommend books to do this and how much are the exams?  I want to be able to do bookkeeping from home in the future and earn extra money for my family but I am stuggling with the cost of courses! I was hoping to be able to get extra days at work to cover the cost but that is not an option.

Thanks in advance Smile

Hi, yes you can self study, but you will need to become a student with the ICB before taking any exams.

Kaplan Practical Bookkeeping book & kit are very good, also Business Accounting 1 by Frank Woods.  Second-hand from ebay can reduce the cost further.

Good Luck and enjoy.

Thanks - I have already looked into the books and had thought that the kaplan ones looked the best.

Has anybody else studied alone and how did you find it - was it made more difficult because of not having tutor support?

Hi bannctb

That is one major problem of not doing a full course, having no tutor to guide you through. I do understand that you have a limited budget, but if you are disciplined enough to study alone then go for it.

If you get stuck, then you can always post you problems on this site. There are many bookkeepers here at all stages of qualification that are willing to help.

Just do not post any questions that relate to actual exams.

Good luck
