Thank you, Liz, and thank you everyone who contributed to a lively meeting!
Here as promised at last night’s meeting are links to the sources I mentioned, available on the Information Commissioner’s website –
Recommended:-
SENDING PERSONAL DATA OUTSIDE THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC AREA (PRINCIPLE 8)
http://www.ico.gov.uk/for_organisations/data_protection/the_guide/principle_8.aspx
(The equivalent of up to 12 pages; the last few pages are not very relevant except the paragraph on Consent.)
Buy someone for Christmas:-
GUIDANCE ON THE USE OF CLOUD COMPUTING
http://www.ico.gov.uk/about_us/research/~/media/documents/library/Data_Protection/Practical_application/cloud_computing_guidance_for_organisations.ashx
Mainly intended for specialists in large organisations. Ignore paragraphs 1. to 48. The next sections are Get a written contract, Selecting a cloud provider and Protecting your data. (From paragraph 70. onwards will bore you silly!)
Very useful:-
A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO I.T. SECURITY (pdf)
Google: ico practical guide security
Describes important topics such as passwords, virus defences and employee awareness and gives a useful checklist about securing data on the move. Focuses on IT rather than document security and misses ‘the cloud’, but otherwise fairly comprehensive.
Thank you all and to Marcel for the mince pies.
Good luck and have a great Christmas!
