Software needed to start payroll management course

Hello,
I am keen to start the payroll management course, but am a little confused about what software I'll need. I have the sage 50 trial version and also have the free downloads from my ICB membership, of, sage one payroll, sage one accounts. I don't know what the difference is between these three, or if, I only need one or two of these things? Or if they will or won't work in combination with each other?

Any advice someone could give me would be very appreciated.

Hi,

I am also think about taking the payroll management course.  I know the sage one payroll is no use for the payroll exam as I have asked Sage about this already.

I will probably go with Ideal Schools as they supply the full software not just a trial version, so then I will be able to use the software once I've set up my company.

Hope this helps.

Hi
Just wondering if either of you had received any info yet as to which software is the best to use for practice purposes and taking the exam.
I am self studying and money is very tight so am trying to keep cost down as much as possible.
Would appreciate an update on this topic if you have one.

Hi All,

I would suggest downloading a trial version of Moneysoft Payroll Manager.  It is a really good piece of software and you can use the trial version for about a month.  Not sure if this will be long enough to do your studying and exam?

Download from here:  http://www.moneysoft.co.uk/payroll-software/payroll-manager-free-trial.htm

Another free version you can download is 12Pay.  You can continue to use the free version indefinitely, but it may have slightly limited functionality so best to check it out first.

Download from here: http://www.12pay.co.uk/DownloadFreePayrollSoftware.aspx

I actually purchased a Sage Instant payroll workbook set from Amazon, very reasonable price, but I don't think it will be of use any more as you will probably need to learn about RTI.  There may be updated ones on there though, you could check this out.  The payroll software was a trial for 180 days and the workbooks were quite comprehensive, covering manual payroll as well as computerised.

Hope this helps

I have just spent a day looking at 12 Pay express, working through an ICB mock exam and I think there are 2 drawbacks.
1] It has no way of recording holiday absence which is a requirement of the syllabus.
2] The useful reports cease to work after 6 payroll runs, the exam requires 8 to 10 runs.

It seems I am being led, lemming like, to Sage!

Hi there,

When you say 12pay Express, do you mean Express or the trial version?

Hi Pauline,

I used the Express trial version which includes reports that are normally only available in the Premier version. When I read the T&Cs I thought it said the reports would be available for 6 weeks, but what it seems to mean is 6 payroll runs,  I busted that limit in a few hours! I'll try the Payroll Manager next but as I have already paid for the exam I'll probably end up with the expensive but reliable Sage.

Cheers

Hi Eb,

If you are thinking of purchasing Sage, you may as well purchase 12pay as it is far cheaper and just as reliable.  I suppose in any trial version of anything functionality will be limited.  I was lucky enough to purchase a Sage workbook course which had a 180 day trial of Sage payroll, but that will be out of date now.

Hi Pauline,

That is exactly what I was thinking of doing. Does the Instants workbook have the necessary functionality?

It certainly did when I did the exam as that is what I used.  Although mine was the 2010-2011 version, so may not be relevant now for the ICB exam?  Does the exam/course include RTI now?

I believe RTI will be examined from  July 1st.

The current payroll exams are either for the year 2011/12 or 2012/13, you have to specify when ordering. This may well change in July though.

Hi,

I only said that the Sage payroll study workbooks I purchased will be out of date now as they will be for 2010-2011.  I did my payroll exam early 2012 so this was ok for the exam then.   As Eb said, the current exams are now 2011/12 and 2012/13, so it will be best to check what years the study workbooks you are purchasing cover.  It is possible to change all the rates etc in the payroll software to match the years, but if you do not know what you are doing it is best to leave well alone.
