UPDATING NIC BANDWIDTHS/RATES IN SAGE INSTANT PAYROLL WORKBOOKS

Hi

I am sure I have seen an answer to this somewhere on the forum a while back but can't track it down.

I am using the Sage Instant Payroll work books to revise payroll before hopefully taking the exam soon. The version I bought on Amazon is Grape Expectations scenario for the year 2010/2011 and it has been really useful and thought I could also use it to take the exam itself.

I wanted to set it up to try the Creative  Remedies mock exam so need to change the rates to 2011/2012 but I can't add the additional NIC bandwidths to put in the correct rates at the correct points.

Can any kind soul on the forum please tell me if there is a way to do this or how they otherwise managed to do the mocks and the exams using this particular programme?  Any help gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

Janet

Hi Janet,

A long time since I used Sage Intant Payroll as I use Sage 50 Payroll now but normally you would have to run the year-end for 2010-2011. Then you should be able to update the PAYE & NI etc. However as we are now in tax year 2012-2013 I don't know if this will be possible.
To change parameters for Tax etc you would go into Company then Legislation and change the details.
For more information on this click on Help, then Help Topics, Index, Legislation, Display and select Maintaining tax & NI and finally click Display.
Sorry can't be of more help to you.

Hi Marilyn.
Thanks so much for your reply. I have used Sage 50 Payroll in an employed capacity so Sage Cover would have sent the New Tax Year upgrade, and I am only using Instant to revise and take the exam myself.
I have gone into legislation to change them [also SSP rates etc] and am quite happy with that except that in 2011/2012 there was an additional NIC bandwidth added according to the HMRC website but I can’t seem to insert/add the additional lines in order to add the rates.
In Instant for 2010/2011 there are 4 bandwidths being LEL, Earnings Threshold, Upper Accrual Point and Upper Earnings Limit but in the 2011/2011 tax year there were 5 bandwidths being LEL, Secondary Threshold, Primary Threshold, Upper Accrual Point and Upper Earnings Limit.
I cannot find a way to add an extra line for the Secondary Threshold to accommodate this. The tax year had moved on to 2011/2012 as I completed the year end process in my revision through the workbooks.
I am stumped! I noticed in a reply you gave to someone else previously who was having a different problem that the rates quoted just covered the 4, being LEL, ET, UAP and UEL, and I wonder if I am being too complicated but it seems like I should be using the right ones.
I must be missing something simple or I bought the wrong package to start with. Feeling very frustrated as I think I am missing something obvious to everyone else and I was hoping to spend the time revising the processes, not the software.
Thanks again for replying.

Hi Janet,

I will get back to you on this later today.
I have another payroll program and I have access to tax years from 2008 onwards.
I will check this for you.

Hi Janet,

I have checked 2010/11 and 2011/12 on my payroll program.
Both years had 5 bandwiths although in 2010/11 bands 1 & 2 were the same but in year 2011/12 they were different.

I have also checked this with HMRC website which is I assume where you got the figures and they agree with my program.

When you go into Company and Legislation and select NI Bands & Rates there is a box that asks you to 'add date' - have you tried that?
Maybe if you change the date to 06/04/2011 it will adjust?

Let me know how you get on as I don't think it should be necessary to purchase another program.

Hi Marilyn. Thanks for the reply. It’s so kind of you. Yes, the add date sounds familiar as I think I have made amends that way on the proper Sage 50 Payroll, but the Instant Payroll is not so versatile. There is no add date function I can see.
It is a bit like being used to a 46inch HD colour flatscreen TV and trying to watch Skyfall on a 12 inch black and white portable!
I think I will give Sage a buzz tomorrow and ask them how to do it. I am in the Accountants Club anyway so they should advise.
Thanks so much for your help. Enjoy the rest of Sunday!
best wishes.
