Sage Instant Payroll Self Study Course

This is a question to anyone that has used Sage Instant Payroll Self Study Course.

I have just purchased this, which includes the 180 days software, with the main objective of being able to use it to complete my exam.  However, I was hoping to work through the practice material and do a mock exam first. I notice that when you install it, you have to put your employer details in.   Would I be able to change the employer details to those in my exam?  I also notice that you can restore information to the previous section at any point, so does this mean I will be able to restore to a position with no employee details, etc. I suppose what I'm asking is, .. Can I use the software more than once?

I am reluctant, at this stage, to install the software and then find I can't use it for the exam.

Hi Deb

I used it to do my payroll exam so I can confirm that yes you can restore to a blank canvas to do your exam.

The tutorial that comes with it is really good, it may seem quite repetitive but it means by the end of it you can do a lot of the processes from memory.

Good luck with the exam.

Hi, I am doing Sage 50 self study course at the moment.

I am sure you have this same agreement with Sage as I have (180 days). I did Level 2 computerised mock and the final exam using this software. You can change data and use it for mock exams and other courses if you like. What you have to do
Is back up your work and save it. You can practice as much as you want and still go back to your course by restoring your back up.

Good luck with your course :-)

Thanks for the advice.  Hopefully, I will know what to do once I get started.

I've just worked through the course and thought that for the money it was pretty good.  I too was planning to do my exam using the software and have realised there's a flaw in my plan.  Hoping there's a way around it.  The software I got from sage is V12 - year 10-11 and the exams on the ICB site are for years 11-12 and 12-13.

@Vik did you just go in and change the parameters in the legistlation section or did you get a more up to date version from sage?

Having a small panic here so your advice would be greatfully received.
THANKS

I have a similar problem. I have just bought 13/14 software and as you can see from my initial post that I was worried about being able to use it for my exam.  I have now worked through the study and done the mock exam.  The exam was for the year 12/13 so I changed the rates, thresholds, etc in 'Legislation', and this seemed to work ok, although there was 12p difference on the monthly NI.  I am now doing the actual exam and as the 13/14 is not available until 1st June, I am doing the same. As long as you have saved a blank canvas as a back-up, you could try changing the legislation figures and do a mock.

Sorry I missed your question georgyg, but luckily DebG saved the day and answered! It's a while since I did the exam, but I'm pretty sure I did the same thing.

Let us know how you get on with the exam!

HELP! I have been studing the Sage Instant Payroll Course but cannot see how to restore the software to a 'blank canvas'. I have the mock exam here to do but cannot get started until I work out how to do this...!

It is the 2013 version that I have. Can anyone help please?

Thank you.  Smile

Hi Heather,

At the beginning our our own course of study students are instructed to take a backup of their work before any payroll information has been added. This then provides a "clean copy" to be restored from to allow you to change company details for further exercises. Our courses are based on Sage 50 Payroll so, unfortunately, I cannot even help you by forwarding a backup file.

Kind regards

Thanks for your reply Brian.

Maybe that is what I should have done Frown but didn't realise I couldn't clear the data in the programme.
It seems others have managed to clear the training data to use for their exam - maybe they had the forethought to back up a blank copy..

Oh dear... Frown

How old is your software. If it is Sage training software they may explain how to clear the data files without the help of a backup. You should give them a call.

Good luck.

Kind regards

Hi Altna

File - Maintenance - rebuild should clear down your files.  Take a back up first if you will be using the data already entered again later.

Hi, I've just been looking on the forum because I have exactly the same problem. I have the same Sage Instant course and have worked through it and downloaded the mock paper from ICB ready to go, but cannot see how to clear the data. There is no option to delete information.
I have even tried deleting the program from my laptop and re-installing it but get an error message saying it is still already installed.
Altna, did you manage to solve this?

Feeling frustated here! My other option is to download the free trial of Moneysoft, but if I do this I want to be sure that I can run the details for the mock exam through it, then be able to clear it (or add a second company) for the actual exam.

I'd appreciate any advice, thank you

Hi Ros

No, sorry - did not manage to reolve. I did the same as you and uninstalled then couldn't get it back onto the computer. I could find no way of getting back to a 'blank canvas' hence trying the uninstall. It seems the only way is to take a back up before you start :(

I did discover though that you could install the software onto another PC - that may help you. I did this but hate working on my PC - much preferring the laptop - I got so frustrated over this that decided to have a break from studying and focus on building up my business. I may return to it again in the future.

Good luck

Regards

Thank you Heather, an honest and clear answer if not the one I had hoped for! I will see if I can install it on a different PC, otherwise will have to try the Moneysoft trial. I have heard that it is good software so it's not that issue which concerns me, more the fact that I might end up with the same problem all over again when I want to delete the mock company details and do the real exam.
Fingers crossed, and good luck with your business growth

Hi,

Due to payroll legislation, where you cannot simply delete historical payroll data, the sage payroll software does not have same rebuild facility as the accounting software. As you were studying the sage self study course this may not have been relevant but any tailored icb course would/should have instructed to take a backup before any payroll data was entered, enabling you to restore back at a later date.

Not much help to you now but maybe useful for future readers of this post.

Kind regards

Thanks Brian, yes I'm sure other forum readers will definitely appreciate this advice. The Sage Instant self study course guides you through everything and includes backups to take you back to any previous chapter in the course, which in itself is useful, but there is not a backup to take you back to the beginning and nor are you advised to make one. I suppose Sage are not offering this course to make it easy for people to pass their ICB exam, it is merely to allow people to learn how to use the software.
I have heard good things about Ideal but for entirely financial reasons I have been entirely self-taught so far from books and Sage self-study. It is much harder without guidance, and these things inevitably happen.
Thanks again

Ros
ps. Yes, the inability to delete historical payroll data makes total sense from a legislative point of view.

You could install it on your PC, and then take a backup of the blank database.
then copy that backup to your laptop in order to do a restore.

Thanks for that, Ros. There are many different study options for all ICB qualifications. Obviously I'm going to endorse the tutor supported options Laughing, but I genuinely wish you the very best of luck when it comes to exam time.

Paul, smart thinking. I like it!!

Kind regards
