When taking over payroll for a client from an accountant, how do you normally take over?

Hi,

I need some opinions from those who are already doing payroll for their clients.  When taking over a client's payroll, what are the things you need from the previous bookkeeper?

How do you take over the work?  Do we request the accountant for files from their payroll package and can these be imported in excel?

I haven't done payroll for any client as such, but I've had experience of doing my husband's company payroll, but at that time I had only used Excel spreadsheets and also there was no RTI at that time.

I would really appreciate your comments.

Thanks in advance,

Vidya

Hi vsikdar,

If its part way through the year you will need to find out if they are required by law to submit in real time. You will need all the employee details including bank details if you are to pay them by bacs etc. you will need thier NI numbers and addresses and if not already on payroll you will need thier NI numbers.

The easiest way to use RTI is through an accounting package. HMRevenue and Customs have thier own free siftware than anyone can use, just down load off the site.  All RTI means that if you submit to real time each week you will not have to do the year end P11's etc,

Kind Regards
