Studying Payroll

Hi.  This is in response to ChrisA and MathewH.  (Sorry, I'm trying to answer to two separate threads and I don't know my way around things Embarassed Smile).

I am not practising yet and only passed my Payroll earlier this month so I can only speak as a Student.  I just wanted to say that I struggled with manual payroll and found it difficult.  Also, I kind of resented doing it as it seems that manual payroll is kind of redundant now.

My tutor, Nick from UK Open College, explained that we need to know manual as we can't just expect to plug data into the software.  We need to be able to interpret and understand the output in case there's a problem like the wrong legislation figures or something.  Also, he explained that clients tend to ask questions like "What would happen if ...?" or "Why is this ...?" and we should be able to tell them.

This made me more determined to push through the difficult stuff.  I submitted the assignments and got them back with help and feedback.  When it came to computerised payroll it was such a relief as it was so much more straightforward and I got through that quite well.  I finally submitted the exam and got a respectable 93%.

So Mathew, please don't despair.  Use your college and your tutor.  They are a great resource and they will help you through everything.  Just keep asking, keep trying and your tutor will explain why/if anything is incorrect.

Chris, I think you should definitely do payroll as well.  I have just submitted my Self Assessment exam and some of the areas overlap so I feel that knowing one subject would help in the other.  It's another service to offer clients and it can only add to our overall understanding of bookkeeping.

Good luck to you both.

Helen

Hi Helen

Thanks for the reply, I guess there is a useful overlap between SA and payroll. I will have to sort out SA first but will definatley download a past paper and have a look.

I have downloaded my SA 20102-13 exam paper today which seems to have a different pass mark to the one on the 2011-12 mock, which year did you do?

Hi Chris

I did the 12/13 exam as well.  I really enjoyed SA.  My results page today changed from "received" to "being marked" so hopefully won't wait too long.  I am confused about the pass mark too.  The exam paper said you need 95% for a pass.  I was under the impression you need to get 100% to pass.  If you know any different please let me know.

All the very best of luck with your exam.  Let us know when you get it submitted.

Hi Helen

Just to confirm, you do need 100% to pass, but anything above a certain threshold and you get to re-answer some of the questions that were not quite right. Unlike the other exams where you have to resit the whole thing, you get your paper back with comment from the examiner and a chance to put them right for a smaller resit fee.

If you satisfy the examiner with your revised answers, you will get a pass but at the original mark that was given.

I hope this makes sense.

The 2012-13 paper does noyt ahve the same assesment criteria shown on the 2011-12 mock paper,  it is now shown as a pass or fail single atempt.

Hi All

David, thank you for explaining, that makes perfect sense.  The exam paper just said "... 95% to pass, ... 94% you fail"

Chris, it seems the stated criteria was probably a mistake eh?

Mathew, thanks for your good wishes.

Best Wishes

Helen
