Hi Liz

Congratulations on your self assessment and best of luck with your payroll. i passed my payroll but am now trying to get the motivation for the self assessment material to sink in. its hard trying to study on your own so I think your idea of new ways to learn the tricky bits is really good. i wish you every success and its something you can add to your practice.  I passed my payroll exam before the new RTI came in properly and found the Sage instant books really good. i think just paying around with the software is a good way to learn, which of course you cant do for self assessment.

Very best wishes

Hi Liz,

The few I have are more relevant to self assessment rather than payroll.  We're doing this right now at college night class where I'm doing HND Accounting.  Many of the people in my class who have never done any tax work before are really struggling with BIK's.

This is especially true when calculating the BIK on a company car, or gym membership or healthcare.  The biggest problem is when the list price is used and when the cost to the business is used.  It can become very confusing until you get it clear in your head.

Thanks Liz

Im trying 2 get my head round dirty and clean cars and writing down allowances at the moment. I know it relates to CO2 emissions, but the concept of dirty cars makes me think they are stolen. (we will get there). Kris best of luck with your HND.

Very best wishes

I'm just studying and I've found pensions rather challenging, but my excuse is I'm too young to have ever given them a thought before now. Tongue Out

One concept that always takes a bit of explaining to clients is sole traders do not get wages but anything they take out is drawings. And the obvious tax implications of this. Especially difficult when a client has been used to receiving a weekly wage for years before becoming self-employed.
