I'm keen to get started on my payroll exam as soon as I've got my level 2 computerised results back, but I am really confused as to how the payroll study process works.

I cant see any study books /material in the shop. Or how to book the exam once you've studied

ive done all self study so far as work in a finance role but have never done payroll before.

What study material can I get  Which will cover the syllabus?

and once im ready what do I do?

in the shop is a sage update RTI course and exam but i have a feeling this isn't the whole exam and syllabus , rather more an add on?

Or am I getting this all wrong!

Can anyone explain in simple terms what I need to do !

Hi Carol,

I have just completed the payroll exam.  I bought the Sage 50 Payroll stages 1 and 2 training package (around £135 from SJSoftware via Ebay), and supplemented with online research for other parts of the syllabus like CIS.  The Sage training package does not give you software which you can use afterwards, but you can complete the exam.  It does come with fairly good manuals, which cover both manual and computerised payroll, so you can refer to them afterwards.  And you can get certified with Sage for payroll along the way.

The Payroll Diploma exam cost £43, which I requested over the phone.  I only submitted this week - so no result yet!

I'm not sure whether the Sage 50 course offered on the ICB website is suitable for newbies.  In any case, by the time you've paid £99 for the course and £49 for the exam, it is more expensive than the package from SJSoftware.

The only other way I found to do it, was to pay £4-500 for a course with one of the training providers, which would include software.

It might be possible to use a free software like 12Pay for the exam, but like you, I needed some background, too, which the Sage manuals did help with.

All the best,

Fiona

Thank you very much Fiona. That is really helpful. I will look into this further. Do you know how I find out exactly what is on the syllabus so I know what I should be covering? I would hate to miss something   Many thanks.

Hi Carol

I studied with UK Open College so I can't advise how to DIY it.  The syllabus is at the following link and I think if you looked at a couple of past papers that would give you a good idea of what's required.  Just be aware that there might not yet be a past paper that includes RTI and CIS as these were only added this year.

Good luck with everything

Helen

Sorry if I've typed this link incorrectly, here's a picture to type it in yourself (as I can't paste in Firefox)

Hi Carol,

In case Helen's link didn't work, here it is again.

I think I've read elsewhere that you've just submitted level 2 computerised - I've just had an amazingly quick turnaround on the payroll exam, so hopefully you won't have to wait long.  I passed with distinction, which I'm over the moon about.  It will be my last exam for a while as that's all the level 3 courses for me.

All the best,

Fiona

Hi

Looking advise from ICB or members who have completed the payroll level 3.

I have yrs of payroll experience so im not too concerned about the syllabus but im overly concerned about the software!

I use IRIS PAYE Master in my job, its great! But for the monthly CISs I go directly to the HMRC website and complete the monthly returns for our authorised clients  and print these off. No record goes through IRIS.

Is this a problem for this paper? Should I buy a specific software for this exam? Or will ICB accept the workings of IRIS and not mark me down????

Any advice would be very grateful

Hi Jennifer,

My recommendation would be twofold:

a) call ICB and see if they have any comment on the IRIS software;
b) do the mock exam, which gives you an idea of the reports required.

Hope this helps,
Fiona

Hi Ladies again, do either of you have any payroll past papers you could send to me Via email? Email is carolyoung69@hotmail.co.uk

im having trouble with the sage payroll training package as it won't let me load the training backups. Password won't work and it's driving me nuts.

I guess I'm going to have to ring sage but not sure how helpful they will be with a training package. Although I did buy it brand new and sealed.

Well done on yr distinction Fiona. You must be very pleased.

Carol
