Sage Accounts & MTD

I have just tried to renew a client's Sage Support only to be informed that because this client is on Sage 50 version 24.2 they will not be MTD compliant in April when the VAT MTD starts and that all owners of Sage 50 have to either switch to the Sage 50C subscription version or pay an extra £25 & Vat every month for the privilage of filing their VAT Return electronically.

This is the first time I have heard this from Sage despite a client just being sold a Sage 50 version 24 upgrade on the regular licesnse.

Has anyone else been told this?

I am really not amused about this as I still can't get the Sage 50C to work properly on the 3 companies that I have moved to it on client manager.

Hi Pam

You just need to be firm.    Sage did say at the Sage Sessions Glasgow that Version 24 would not be compliant for MTD. I was there when they said it very clearly.

However Sage do not have MTD Version 25 ready yet,  which is what they said at the sage sessions,  so I have told my clients not to upgrade until April 19.

Just be firm with your account manager.     All the software companies are the same now they are trying to sell and you just need to say no.

Ring your account manager and demand they sort out your other 3 companies which is a different issue.

I have had so many tech support on the Sage 50c issue that it is ridicolous, it has bee nrumbling on since October last year.

It is the subscription fact that annoys me most, I know they said that 24 was not MTD compliant, however I would expect them to issue an update to make it so as in some cases other software companies will not have their links to Sage version 25 ready for a few months after the release.  One of my clients is a vehicle rental company and they rely on an integration between the rental booking system and Sage for their customer ledger.

Hi Pam

Unfortunately all softwares from all the companies are now subscription based.     You need to contact your account manager and put in an official complaint before you send it ask for their managers email as well.

That Sage 50C issue needs to be resolved first.   Version 25 will be compliant before April 19 sage have confirmed that.

If Sage are saying that we have to pay on subscription, I will be very annoyed.  I purchased Sage 50c for a few of my clients 15 months ago, when they removed support for Sage Instant Accounts.  At that time, I was assured that it would be a one-time purchase which would last approximately 5 years or until Windows updates prevented further upgrades.

I was also assured that any legislative alterations (such as MTD) would be incorporated into the software and updates would be provided.  Hopefully, this is just someone at Sage that is giving incorrect information and I will follow this with interest.

Unfortunately not, I have checked with my Account manager and that is correct, two of my clients who are affected just bought version 24 towards the end of last year.

I have managed to get them the subscription at 50% discount for the next two years but am still not amused, for one of them it will be a saving as they always take the Sage cover, although they will now oly have a 5 day turnaround on data repair rather than the express, the other one does not take the cover and as they use the Sales Order Processing module even at half price it is going to be a huge chunk of extra expense.

Hi, I’ve just come on the forum to post regarding the same issue. My client upgraded to V24 at the end of last year so that they could still access the HMRC portal in Feb 18. Now we’re being quoted £28 per month plus vat.

My client doesn’t want to go to a monthly fee and doesn’t like  change (he hates the idea of bank feeds). I, however, would love to switch him to Xero so this may be a good thing for me!

Why anyone continues to pay Sage is beyond me.

Only way to change their shoddy behaviour is to vote with your feet.

So glad I don't use Sage. Dinosaurs, always become extinct eventually! Sooner the better.

Watch out, I have just discovered that the client I moved fro mSage 50 Accounts Plus to Sage 50C in July to solve the MTD issue (only did it, as their Sage Support was up for renewal and the price was comparable) now no longer can use memorise and recall journals, supplier invoices or customer invoices.  I had been told that the only features that would not be available were POP, SOP and foreign Trader, none of which were needed anyway.

Hi

I just want to put some fairness in here.   I went to sage sessions last year and they were very clear that MTD would be a subscription model.   So if any members feel they were missold speak to Julie Wedgewood and sage if you are at the summit or tweet her

What I fail to understand though that members are annoyed by the subscription fee and then say I will change to xero. Xero is a monthly subscription it is not a one-off payment, in fact, there rumours on accountancy forums that Xero are thinking about raising the fees. It may all be rumours.

This post is not about whether or not Xero and Sage or better than each other I have clients who like both and will not change.

The simple fact is Sage, Xero, Quickbooks, Freeagent, Kashflow are all subscription fees so you will have to get used to it.    Yes and they all have bank feeds and will all be MTD ready.

I think I’m the only one on this post that said we we’re moving to Xero. My client is the one that’s annoyed at being missold, not me! I’m delighted and very happy to have bank feeds etc. Maybe  I’m the only one with an old fashioned client who doesn’t like change? I only got him upgraded from a dos based Sage when I took over 4 years ago!

Not sure if this is the place to mention this (I am only a student currently studying level 3) I have a friend who has a business and they use sage 50 for their website shop and accounts and they are currently being told they will have to pay £125 a month to MTD compliant. Reading the comments in this forum it seems a little steep?

Not sure exactly what they get for this price, but this is a small ltd company with 3 staff members.

I think the main problem for our clients is that small businesses do not like change, I think the main problem for us Bookkeepers is to persuade the clients that web based software as a service will actually save more money per month than the monthly subscription costs.

I have a client who is using Sage on desktop, and has so many duplicated processes due to this Sage preference.  If he moved to say Xero and a cloud based SOP/POP App he actually save all this duplication and become more efficient and have more time to grow his busines or have more spare time.  It would also make my role so much easier and quicker!  But all he see is the £25+ per month.  Clients don't mind paying monthly for mobiles, TV, utilities but have grown up thinking Accountany Software is a one off purchase.

We, Bookkeepers, have to do this persuaion which actually is a cost to us in time, but means we can use this as a Marketing tool to maybe change the way we work with our clients?

What do you think?
