i'm a mac user and Moneysoft / downloading Sage is out so I'm looking at Quickbooks / Kashflow or possibly Sage One Cloud based software for the payroll exam, does anyone have an opinion on which is the most suitable?

Many thanks,

Simone

Good Afternoon Simone

I have been looking at software to use for the payroll exam and even did the online mock .... Worth doing ! ... The reports required are very non product specific, I thought they would be totally Sage biased .... So just use the cheapest best option for your situation. Sage One is difficult to use as you just can't blow it away and start again.

Thanks Trevor, maybe I'll take a look at Quickbooks first of all then.

Did you use Sage then for the mock? if so may i ask - did you also use  either a training provider course or the Sage workbooks?

Hi Simone

On the mock you just answer the multiple cohoice questions and get the computerised excercise. You then can see how you did on the multiple choise questions and down load the model print outs. I didn't do the exam !!! It was a complete scope it out excercise.

The Level 3 Payroll Manager syllabus is very wide ranging and covers alot of ground (including CIS). To obtain this knowledge, you have to do alot of research (from different sources) and obtain some suitable software.

If you choose a training provider then the course materials cover the syllabus and they provide the necessary software (always Sage - but no good to you on a Mac).

There are no ICB/Kaplan books for this exam. The only material out there is the Sage CBT courses, HMRC site and dare I say IAB publish two books for their IAB level 1 and 11 payroll courses for £30 (these books dont cover CIS). There are posts on this forum by people that have totally self studied, but most do a training provider course (that may work out cheaper in the end).

Regards

Trevor

PS - I am currently doing my Self Assesment course and payroll will be the last !!

I thought I'd share my findings in case any other Mac users come across this thread :-)

Well along with Quickbooks, Kashflow is also out, due to the reports not quite being suitable and again nowhere to show holiday leave entitlement / remaining.

I took a quick look at 12pay - toying with the idea of downloading a windows emulator in order to run it, but from the demo video it looked quite old-fashioned compared to Quickbooks and Kashflow.  Which leaves me with Sage (if online is possible),  Moneysoft (via a windows emulator) and something called Payroo which I think is online.

Payroo looks promising, it's free - runs in the browser, perhaps isn't as intuitive to use the others.

Sage One cloud doesnt do holidays, Sage 50 cloud does but there isnt a free trial - so i think im going to check out Xero and then Moneysoft if Xero doesnt work out.
