I personally found it better to do the manual exam first , because 1) you're in the mindset of a manual bookkeepr currently, and 2) you learn the level 2 concepts manually before you start to put them into practice on a computer.
I upgraded straight away to Affiliate, and then again to Associate when I'd completed level 2, but I'm not sure that there were any advantages to it.
