Till Receipts

Hi Everyone

I've been a bookkeeper for a while but I'm new to the forum - looks like there's a lot of good advice to be found here and I could use a hand please !

I have a client who runs a cafe. He has a till but it's very old and quite basic.  He has 4 buttons set up for his various types of sale and at the end of each day the till gives him a total for each type of sale and a grand total - fine so far. However, just after where it says 'Z' (and before the individual sales totals) there is another amount and next to it the abbreviation of 'ST'. This amount doesn't seem to tie up to anything and is not included in the grand total. It seems to vary wildly from several thousand pounds to just a copule of hundred.

Does anyone have any ideas what this could be ?  I'm worried he's making other sales that aren't being recognised.

ST normally means subtotal.  Not sure if this helps you work out the figure?

Hi Julia

MMMM a mystery to be solved eh gang well In have to be honest and say I dont have a Scooby!!! Laughing

Julia my advice would be to find out who the manufactuerer of the till is and contact them they would be best place to advise. Having just looked at a few online till manuals they do seem pretty standard that ST is a subtotal the trick is working out of what.

I hope this is of some help.

Kind regards
Stuart

PS can you please make sure you use the right part of the forum for postings this is a technical query rather than an intro but as you a new we will let you off and say welcome hehehehehe Tongue Out

I wish there was a box that tells you which forum a posting is in when you click the "latest topics". At the moment they have

Topic Started By Replies Views Last Post

It would be handy if in between "Topic" and "Started by" they had a box for "Forum" then it might stop me clicking on postings in the "Fellows" forum. I get all paranoid when I see "RESTRICTED - KEEP OUT" that all the "Fellows" are in there talking about the rest of us minions.

Hi Stuart

Thanks for your help - I think that going direct to the manufacturer might, as you say, be the only way.

Sorry about the inappropriately placed post.  The Getting Started Guide said I should introduce myself and 'Start a New Topic' - didn't realise that was done in 2 separate places - you live and learn !

Cheers, Julia

HI Peasie

Its safe to say we talk about ourselves.  Other then saying hello to each other, and asking how each other how we are doing.   Its not all that exciting really.  Maybe some discussion about  our regional groups

Hi All, Mystery solved ! Following on from Kris' post that ST is normally subtotal, I had a bit more of a play around with the numbers. It seems that the subtotal is the total of the days takings added to all the previous days since the till was reset. Since the till is hardly ever reset and there's only room for 4 digits before the decimal point, the figures didn't look right when I initially looked at them e.g a total of 20134.99 just shows as 0134.99 ! Thanks all for your thoughts
