Are we visible enough?

Just been browsing in my local bookshop at a selection of books for small business start-ups. Interesting to see lots of recommendations for professional assistance from accountants, particularly ICAEW, but not one mention of a bookkeeper! Surely, we are more valuable in this context but why no mention? Any ideas and what can we do to change this?

Hi Sharon

I think you've raised an interesting point and it is a question I have asked myself.

I've come to the conclusion that, on the part of the author, it would not be wise to suggest a bookkeeper as they would have to caveat it with points on what a bookkeeper can and cannot do versus an accountant and thereby probably confuse the reader. It is therefore easier and safer to tell them to go to an accountant.

When a new business goes to an accountant they will have their needs assessed and if the accountant believes then (or at a later date) that they'd benefit from a bookkeeping service, they'd either offer it themselves or provide details of one they trust.

So, that in itself makes our task of changing the world harder!

Personally, and please tell me if this already happens, I'd like to see the ICB advertising in the various trade and professional mags explaining the benefits of a bookkeeper to these businesses. Raise awareness of the qualification and what a business would gain by using an ICB qualified bookkeeper.

We ourselves should also take responsibility for raising awareness with small businesses, networking with local groups and helping them understand that they don't have to wait until they are drowning in paperwork and their accountant is screaming at them before they contact us.

It will be interesting to see others thoughts on this subject.

Hi all

Liked your take on ICB visibility, Vic.

Was just thinking that the Federation of Small Business (FSB) would be good to get into as well for raising awareness.

And of course the quality of our own work will naturally promote the Institute and our profession.

Thanks guys for your ideas. Is there anyone specifically at ICB who can receive ideas for promoting the organisation? Or do we just use the Forum and see what filters onwards and upwards?
